Off to a fast start. Anyone know why this card is so tough to locate in high grade other than the obvious black borders?
Edit: I see there are no 10's from the set but a decent amount of 9's.
Looks like this 8.5 sold in 2011 for $2,777

WOW
Card #1 always seems to add a premium.
Well if that's true then the 'none graded higher' subtitle on the auction could easily mislead someone who doesn't check the pop report.
da ditka rook in a 7 or better is a pretty tough one, too.
even when an 8 does come up, its usually o/c
been looking for a while...
Since it is card #1 it is always more difficult to find without damage.
No 10's of anyone or 9's of Unitas but some of the other players.
I hadn't bothered to check prior to starting the thread so in a sense I answered my own question after seeing you have a roughly 1% chance of getting a Mint grade on submission.
The 71 Topps are similar but seem to be easier in high grade so I wonder if its packaging, print issues, centering etc.
The 62 set has always been tough in high grade, but prices have been crazy high for anything higher than an 8 in the last year. Also, there is a lot of competition in the Unitas player set, so probably some deep pockets chasing a top pop. Either way, it can probably be traced back to the registry.

This guy would probably freak if he knew he had a trading card going for this much money!

The white showing on the red border on the right side just seems like an eyesore for a 10.
It's hard to tell from the scan if that is slight PD or chipping. I looked at the other 10 listed on EBay and it has very minor white in the upper right corner region and just barely some white showing on the bottom corners.
This example referenced has stunning corners and even the back is centered. That said it caught my attention too. It looks like when you look at other copies of the card it is plagued with centering and print issues so definitely a rare card in this condition one would think. I just checked and only 69 PSA 10's from the set out of nearly 52,000 submissions. The card in a 9 is a POP 9.
Pop 1 of a hof rookie card. Might go a lot higher.
Yeah I have noticed over the years big results out of some of these really tough NFL sets.
With social media maybe someone can alert him to the auction. I bet he would like to see it.
You are aware that he is an NFL HOFer right? That is his RC as well. Not just some spare that is happy to be remembered
Yes. And this card in a PSA 7 just sold for $16.06. And this raw copy just sold for $5.07. You could buy just under 872 copies at the PSA 7 price for the current bid. I feel confident he would be shocked.

Incredible Wehrli rookie which represents the single finest example in the hobby. A fresh and wonderfully preserved stunner with four sharp corners, wonderful centering and strong card stock. Boasts fantastic surfaces for the condition sensitive issue with beautiful print, color and focus throughout. A nice HOFer in PSA 10. Deserving of the finest collection. One of nearly 12,000 cards, lots, and sets up for bid in our 5th Auction of 2017. Click on the link above to view the other PWCC auction lots.
And you can buy a PSA 6 62 Unitas for under $150. That is how it goes with low pop and Pop 1 highly desired HOFer cards for registry sets
I have some registry sets. I am quite aware of the exponential increase in price. I have told a few of the subjects and they were shocked at what their cards can sell for. Like I said I imagine the same is true here.
There is also a collector with a serious stranglehold on many of the top cards from this set so that impacts it too.
Agree with Dpeck on this one. I think he would be surprised to see how much his rookie card in PSA 10 is worth.
