Home Trading Cards & Memorabilia Forum

Well, I've retracted my first eBay bid. I'm now scum.

So a few days back I was the first bidder on a lot of 5 cards that were started on a .99¢ auction. I generally don't bid until the last few seconds but I decided I'd bid up to $26 on them. They are worth more but I just wanted the cards put into my actives bids page. Well a couple of days later I was out bid and I decided to just wait till the last few seconds to snipe.

This morning I woke up to an email from eBay saying that the high bidder had retracted and I was now the high bidder again. So I took a closer look at the retraction and listing and realized I wasn't actually the first bidder. Someone had retracted before my bid. I bid to $26 but my bid was back to .99¢. So seeing that two people had already retracted, the last of whom had 0 feedback and exposed my high bid I decided I needed to reread the listing. Turns out in my haste to make a bid I disregarded the shipping costs. It was $125. Yes. One Hundred and Twenty Five Dollars for 5 raw modern cards whose value was not even close to that amount.

I reached out to the seller and asked if the shipping was an error and if so would he be willing to make it a more reasonable amount. His reply was "Hello, I don't no ? Is there a problem ? I politely reply that yes in fact it was and if we couldn't work out a more reasonable amount I would retract. His reply "Retract you".

So I thought about it for a few mins not wanting to have a bid retraction on my record but then I realized that if he shipped the cards and they were not as described I would only be refunded .99¢ and be out $125 for shipping. Yeah that wasn't going to happen. So now I am an eBay deadbeat with a retraction on my record because some moron likes to play games with his listings.

So if you happen across any listings of brunogarofano on eBay proceed at your own peril.

End of rant,
Kevin

Good for you. He probably was the one who bumped your bid up in the first place, too.

Good for you. I thought eBay frowned on ridiculous shipping fees.

Obviously it's important to read the specifics before bidding, but there is no shipping method that should be anywhere near that much for 5 cards in the $25 range. That's just nuts. F that guy. The F is for Forget.

Your bid retraction was the right thing to do and it won't effect your eBay status. I've retracted a dozen bids in the last 15 years without any problems.

Well, besides pissing off the Mafia, I'd say you're free as a fish at the bottom of the sea.

How about a link to this auction? I'd like to ask the seller about his shipping charges and see what kind of response I get back

Here's the link. Have fun but he just changed the listing to include a buy it now of $650c. In my opinion his most valuable card is the YG and that's only a $30 card.

It is. I own that I should have looked closely but I don't think I've run across anything that extreme. The cards are worth more than $25. That was just my opening bid so that I could get reminders. My watch list was full (I have a wandering eye ;) ). But in my opinion they weren't worth the shipping amount.

Yeah I saw that too. It's a Quebec listing (as he puts it French Canada) so you need to read it with a peppy le pew voice for bounus points.

It looks like they have a few other listings with low starting bids and high shipping.

    Good for you for retracting.

I'm curious if you just didn't pay, would that be better? Essentially ignore this prick and have a non-payment on your account. Do sellers see that blemish vs. seeing the # of retractions?

    Hiya Kevin

Did you talk to anyone at eBay about this?

I can't see how 1 retraction will have any effect on your record?
