Anyone dealt with Dick Osburn Rare Coins?

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,372 ✭✭✭✭✭

Do they answer emails? I've been waiting a week for a response to questions I have about a coin on their website.

It's June, and a lot of people take a week off for vacation. I would guess that they are just closed for a while, as it doesn't make sense that a dealer would ignore a possible coin sale.

I think Dick retired to his study. But I'm going by recall and that's not so good.

Bought some nice BH dollars from him. Five years ago and never a problem.

Dick always had a nice group of AU Capped Bust Half Dollars in his case at Long Beach. He's a very knowledgeable and personable man. When we weren't discussion coins, we'd discuss running, as he had run a number of marathons over the years.

Bought many beautiful CBH's from Dick 10 years ago. He commanded top dollar and got it. I know Brian, and I will never forget him for selling me my beloved 1877 Trade $1 when he was with JJ Teaparty.

I see there is a forum love fest for these guys, I'm just wondering why the description for this 1795 Half doesn't mention it is ex-mount.

The only coin I bought from Dick Osburn was a 1795 half - over 15 years ago. Turns out it was plugged and repaired, but it was also an R6 and fairly priced. So while he offered to take it back, I ended up keeping it.
I think his area of expertise is the Seated Liberty series.

  • gripgrip Posts: 9,962 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Don't see anything suggesting it's a mount.?

Priced like it had a mount, isn't that the important part after all.

Brian is a good guy, call or write again. Emails can fall by the track sometimes.

Last week Brian admitted to me that it is ex-mount and thanked me for pointing it out to him I just wish he would have changed the description to state so. No biggie I guess.

Very nice people but overpriced coins in my opinion. I bought a few but overall not particularly high end coins. He and his wife were always willing to show you coins and talk about coins but the prices were high for the quality.

I had about an hour long telephone conversation with Dick Osburn in the late 90's or so. He had an add in Coin World and I was looking at some of his cheaper Seated Dollars. He talked me out of buying the coins in question.
He did give me a piece of advice I use to this day. He said, "learn to look at coins not just for your collection, but what the next buyer is going to see," have used many times.
I have about 8 coins from Dick Osburn coins. both coins and advice have held value. James

I think Dick retired and Brian is running the business now. They usually brought a nice display of AU Capped Bust Halves to Long Beach Shows and their pricing was reasonable.

Dick used to be an enthusiastic marathon runner, so at a show, if he wasn't busy, we discussed running as well as coins.

While I suspect that I will get some pushback I hope I can get some help. I have a check for $13,250 written on Brian Cushing Osburn Cushing Numismatics B of A account that has been returned with a notation Account Closed. There have been numerous phone calls and emails with no response. A police report has been filed and Doug Davis of Numismatic Crimes has been contacted. Anyone that can help me would be most appreciated.

How long did you hold the check before you tried to cash it or deposit it? If it was several months, he may have gone out of business and closed the business account long after he wrote the check.

This is why I never let checks collect dust. I had heard though the grape vine that DORC had gone upside down. My thoughts are with Brian that he finds light at the end of the tunnel and all get made square.

The check was from a sale made to Brian at Summer FUN in July. It was deposited shortly after the sale.

In this hobby and business it helps a lot to have strong instinctual awareness also some legal acumen.

The local police department was able to issue an arrest warrant on someone who bounced a $340 or so check on me who lives on the other side of the country. He paid right away.

I never interacted with Brian Cushing and can not speak to his character, but I happened to remember the name from somewhere and voila, I found a thread that was bumped earlier this year. A new member posted that he had still not been paid by Brian from a consignment from 2019. Coincidentally, the last comment on the thread was mine. Take this for what it’s worth.

That is sad to read. Fortunately, you've taken steps. Did you consign him coins and the check was the payout?
