Anyone ever send cards to COMC? Any problems?
I decided to send in about 420 commons and minor stars from a 1958 Topps Baseball set. I kept (and submitted to PSA) anything that I felt had a chance to grade 8 or better and sent them the rest which were mid-grade (VGEX-EXMT).
I knew that it would take quite awhile to get them scanned and uploaded, but I'm in no rush to flip them and it wasn't worth my time to post them on EBay.
This morning I was excited to finally see 200 of the cards processed and added to my account. Needless to say I was shocked to see about 10% of the group graded as poor and all with a fresh tear across the side of the cards. Appears to be uniform in positioning.
This really frustrates me because I went through the entire set card by card also removing creased, wrinkled cards that wouldn't be worth posting there either. Anyone else have this problem ? Other than reaching out to Customer Service, any suggestions.
I was hoping to send about 10,000 vintage cards to them but now I'm having second thoughts

Based upon the few that have the same tear, I was wondering if they used a box cutter or something to cut the shipment open and accidentally damaged some cards or if they use some sort of auto feeder scanner that can damage cards.

Luckily the Willie Mays I sent to them was in a card saver case so it didn't sustain any damage. That would have turned a $50 card into a $10 card in a hurry.

what did you send the other cards in ?

All the cards were sent in a typical 600 count baseball cardboard box. I sent 3 cards in protective sleeves as they were all worth more than $25 each. The rest were not in sleeves per their specific instructions. The shipping label was taped to the box. Just doesn't make sense to me. Out of the 200 cards they have posted to date, it looks like 10 have been assigned the "poor" designation and have the tear. Not a huge sum of money, but they basically turned $4 cards into worthless cards. More interested in learning if anyone else has had this problem with them before I send in anymore cards.
There are plenty of discussions on blowout forums about sending cards to comc and having them get damaged. I just received my latest (and last ever) purchase from them where some cards were not as described, like having pencil marks on the back.
Doesn't sound very well run and the prices are usually way too high. I only used them to buy mid to low grade late 70s star player cards where buying from eBay would have killed me with shipping costs. Luckily I'm finished with my sets and I don't need to use them anymore.
The "tears" are in different positions/sides so the box cutter theory is out. Those "tears" are actually a common defect found on 50's cards and caused by Topps in the production process. When you were going through your cards, if you noticed the defect at all, you only figured it as a print line or print mark. But when PSA looks at them, or in the this case COMC, they severely affect the technical grade of the card. The only reason you're aware of the tear now is because COMC graded them poor and you now have to look at the card closer and figure out why. If you sent anything with that defect to PSA it will also come back with a low grade. Of course you never would have sent any cards with tears to PSA or COMC, but you just weren't aware at the time that's what they were and how they would affect the grade.
The one thought I had when I looked at the scans were that the box cutter theory COULD be possible, if the cards that had the mark on the left side were packaged upside down. I'm not sure why you would package the cards inconsistently like that, though.
This. As soon as I saw that damage, it's exactly the same as many of the 57's and 58's I have. I think you just missed the damage. It really is a very common defect.
Reminds me of a Jim Brown RC that I had with the exact cut on the border. I'd also go with you missed it
Man if that's the case that I missed the damage I really need to trade these 55 yr old eyes in for a new set. Still strange that I have about 20 cards from this raw set on EBay now and none have that damage and I have sold about a dozen of the star cards from this set and none had the cuts.
they seem to be in the exact place though .....if the cards were packaged upside down, so the box cut theory survives. I would send it to Forensic analysis..

Or just post pictures and only have people knowledgeable about what they're looking at respond.

10 cards out of the 200 processed so far had the production cut. So that's 5%. You currently have 11 1958's listed and 8 sold. So at the same percentage rate you might have one in at that sample size. The $13.49 Martin currently on and the sold #285 Frank Robinson looks like they might have the cut but it's hard to tell for sure from the poor quality scans. COMC did not damage your cards. They looked like that when you sent them in.
I believe that something happened to the cards. There is no way the seller missed that many cuts, imo. And if you turn the cards appropriately the cuts are all in exactly the same place. If the cuts were all over the place then I would say the seller missed them. COMC should fess up and offer the seller a discount or a few free sales.
exactly.. especially if he is sorting them out to send the best cards ..you would definitely see the cuts
unless he is Mr Magoo

who puts the price on the cards you send to COMC

Sorry this happened to you.
I've been very lucky so far and all of the 60's - 70's cards I have got from COMC looked as good or better than I thought I was getting. Packaging has also been excellent.
The one annoying thing is when you make an offer and it tells you the seller is not accepting offers at this time after you made an offer. I wish if the seller was not accepting offers that they would remove the offer option from their listing and not waste my time. There are also a few sellers that don't seem to want to actually sell anything with ridiculous prices.
