SBA 1981 S MS68 !!!!!

I can't believe this , but when I looked at the pop report for SBA MS coins , it now shows 1 coin graded MS68 for the 1981 S SBA series , but still none graded MS67 !!!! Does anyone know who made this coin , or if it's a mistake ? DRG ? Tad ?
Thanks !!

I see it listed there. I just can't believe it. I have seen this kind of thing many times before. The pop # will go up only to disapear a few days later. I don't have any coins in for grading right now so I can't be optimistic.

I believe that what happens is that when a initial grading is done it gets added to the pop reports but when the final grade is given the pop # gets adjusted. It does make me wonder if this coin will make MS67. Or maybe it is just input error. Who knows? But I wont get too excited unless that # stays for a week or more.

I fit is real. What a monster!!!!!

Well, according to the set registry, there is one finer 1981S than in DRG's set (this coin?), but the finest possible set is still the same as DRG has. Probably a quirk in the database. (Like the Liberty Nickel set that is 88% complete but has a rating of 0.00)

There's a "phantom" 81-S MS67 that has appear and disappeared at least a couple times over the last few years, I suspect this is more of the same. I really don't understand how PCGS messes these things up. But, you never know... might be one MS68 snuck out by a mint employee somewhere. image

The 2002-D Sac pop report has fluctuated recently too -- showed an MS67, then none, now showing one again. Also a 2002-P in MS67 showing. I don't know if those are real either. The 2002-P MS67 in particular seems quite unlikely given how few have been submitted and the awful quality, unless it was a really careful submitter. I posted some eBay auctions that now have erroneous population info in them if they are true. Anybody know?

It is the "blind" marketing stategy by PCGS now. If it is in the report, it must be true. If it is no longer in the report, then it must be true. If you have it in hand, it has to be true, otherwise who knows.

It's most likely an input error. PCGS is quite hard on 81-S SBAs.image

I just called PCGS and asked about the coin. They didn't have any info for me but said they would check into it. I asked them to post a response on this thread so we will see.

Could be a proof 68. Occasionally that error happens as well and temporarily (or longer) messes up the pop reports.

    DRG,

While we're anxiously awaiting the response to your call, I'd be interested in hearing the story behind your icon (if there is one). I do like the toning on that coin! Is the obverse as nice?

WH; I found my icon years ago while searching 1980S $2,000 bags. It is PCGS slabbed as a "copper wash" error. I opened a thread about it here once asking opinions and was told it is relatively common. However I have never seen a similar SBA. Someone did post a picture of a State Quarter also labeled as such. The SQ was solid copper and appeared dull. My coin only has this color on the reverse but it is brilliant. The scan doesn't do it justice as it is certainly the most interesting SBA I have ever seen.
    I hope you like it.
I take it you don't have a 1981S SBA being graded right now that you thought might be a MS68.?image

    DRG,

Thanks for the story. No, I don't have any 81-Ss in at the moment. It has been a long time since I've even seen one I thought would make a 66.

wasn't there an open offer made a few weeks ago by a member of $10K for an 81-S MS67 SBA? technically, if this holds up he'd be off the hook cause it's a 68!!! but whoever made the offer sounded sincere. anybody remember?

Yea, it vaguely rings a bell. Just give me a Tad longer to think about it.

It was me. It still stands. Well, for the MS68. If it is real, as it would now be the highest graded. I don't know what a MS67 would be worth now. I am still waiting to see if it is real.

I just got done going through about 25 1981 mint sets, and all the "S" SBAs were in terrible shape.image

    I have gone through more then 400 1981 mint sets. I made ONE 1981P MS67, 2 or 3 1981D MS67, and 2 or 3 1981S MS65's, not even a single MS66 1981S. It is really hard for me to believe there is a MS68 out there.

I am still holding my breathimage

I am with you on this one I dont see any way there is a 1981-S MS68 out there I have made 3 1981-S MS66s and went through approx 500 1981 mint sets most of the S coins look like there were laid on a highway and ran over for a few days and then put in the mint sets Lousy Quality.
