Latest Sub..... A question and some highlights scanned! UPDATE.

LOTSOSLOTSOS Posts: 1,308 ✭✭✭✭✭

So my latest sub popped earlier this week and I waited till it arrived today to open it. Over all not bad, missed on a few modern cards but such is life. But I have one question that I'm wondering if anyone here can answer. I will contact PSA Monday but its going to be a few days so I though a few of our more knowledgeable board members might be able to help me out.

The item in question is a 1981 Post Cereal Standup. I need one for my Perreault set registry and enjoy trying to sub as much as I can myself. I looked on line and saw that they are graded both with and without the bottom tab. I decided to sub mine with the tab for three reasons. First there are fewer of them. Second because on the Perreault his auto goes below the perforation. Third I think the tabbed version looks better. The first photo is of a Denis Savard example graded with tab and the second is Mark Howe without. My Perreault was returned "Return, No Grade, No Charge". There was something written below the sticker so I tried to remove it and some of it could be "read note". So If anyone has any idea please let me know.

Thanks,
Kevin

Now for a few highlights:

Spoke with PSA this morning. Apparently they don't grade them with tabs anymore. I forgot to ask but since this is the case will the requirement for the set registry be dropped? Guess I'll have to call again or email.

    Kevin,

When a card that was required in a Registry Set is no longer graded it can be moved to the optional section of the Master Set and not count towards the GPA and Set Rating. Usually someone has to make a request to have the card moved to the optional section. At least that is what has been done with the Nolan Ryan Master Set.

ETA: If you click below where it takes you to my Nolan Ryan Master set and go to the last page you will see a bunch of items in red. All those items are optional are not counted towards the completion of the set.

    Donato,

Thanks for the info. I guess that's one less oddball item I'm going to have to pickup.

How did the Perrault box bottom only grade a 5 and what are you using to cut these cards?

I started a thread a while back asking for suggestions. After trying various methods off cutting them and settled on cutting them by hand with a straight edge. I practiced a bunch on other cards and found that if you used as thin of a blade as you could hold steady, A thick metal straight edge held with pressure and a bunch of bourbon made it a piece of cake. I know some of the edges may look like they flair a little but that's a bit of distortion from the scanners. It was the upper most card on the right on the scan so it isn't centered well on the lens. I found with my scanner that position on the bed itself could drastically alter the appearance of a card.

As for why it's a 5 there are two ever so small depressions on the surface of the card. One on the front and one on the back. I can give a more detailed scan tomorrow but just by zooming in on the front one it's here:

The one on the back is small too and on an outside edge. Neither can be seen from the other side. It was a good eye that caught it though because if you don't use just the right angle of raking light they are invisible.

Thanks for the info on the Post Standups.
I could use a Bobby Clarke for my set, and have only found a "No Tab".
I didn't realize how small the tab actually is, not sure why they would be separated.

Also, nice looking Lipton and Esso, those "oddballs" can be a pain to find and to find clean ones.

ps Nice to see some Hockey Cards

Agreed on the Lipton! Those Liptons are way more difficult to find with decent grade than some may realize.

Awesome stuff, love seeing hockey well represented here. Thanks for sharing.

Well I picked up the Clarke Post, and put in a request to have it added to the Master Set.
There are only 2 "No Tab" both 10's and 1 "With Tab" at a PSA-9

Good Luck with your Perreaults and Sabers ... love seeing the Hockey
