Hi All-
Not sure if a monster box specialist out there, but which is better 2010 or 2013?? Also, is there really a premium for being unopened? Do both straps need be present??
Thanks for taking a look!

Funny, have a fair amount of reply in US coin forum...not sure which to post to for this....
I assume you are talking about a monster box of ASEs. Leaving the mint straps on will help for resale. Not only a premium for you, but peace of mind for the buyer. As far as the date....if you could get either at the same price, I'd do the 2010.

If the straps are removed I assume the coins were examined and the MS70 coins were removed and replaced. Why else would someone bother to removed the straps if not to cherry pick the best coins to submit to one of the major grading services for grading and slabbing?

to confirm what's inside? Especially if buying from an individual and not a bullion dealer.
To the OP, for resell best to have the sealing straps if selling the whole box. However a serious buyer will most likely want to look inside before buying. Make sure he understands once opened and confirmed, it's his. I'd have the payment in hand before he breaks the straps.
I open them and don't have them graded. The higher price per coin I get selling them individually and by the tube outweighs the profit from selling the whole sealed box. A buyer of a whole box expects some discount, but yes he will pay a wee bit more if it's sealed.
No difference in the value for 2010 and 2013.
The mint has fessed up that a limited number of 2014-2017 West Point labeled boxes were actually struck at the San Francisco and Philadelphia mints. Here's a link to the story and a screen shot of the numbers.

My guess is that the 2013 are less likely to have a lot of milk spotted coins.
Can the straps be slipped off and put back on or is it necessary to sever them? Looks like the lid is grooved such that the straps can't be slipped off.
Why would anyone waste time cherrypicking ASE rolls when at the beginning of the year places like APMEX submit monster boxes 100 or more at a time?
Don't think so they are tight and they are strong. Gotta cut them. You can easily lift the 47 lb box by them.

Thank you for all the good information. Much appreciated...RJ
Nuther question. What is the best way to ship one and about how much to do so?
At least one authorized purchaser is currently selling 2016 sealed boxes for less than the 2017 issues, so there's not a premium for a sealed box, at least of recent years. As the number of them decrease, you could probably expect them to be a bit pricier. I would look askance at any MB without the straps as would any dealer/AP.
I've never shipped one but it's too large for a flat rate box, would require registered for the PO to insure it. I imagine the dealers I bought from shipped it with private insurance. They always arrive FedEx.

Every time I have sold a Monster Box the buyer sent me a shipping label and I just dropped it off at either FEDEX or UPS
Oreo cookies. See Keet's thread.
So it's highly likely that those buyers were dealers.
UPDATE: US Mint is now backtracking on the monster box serial numbers of ASEs not struck at West Point
Earlier, incorrect serial numbers released by the mint. (The are sticking by their mintage numbers):
