Are what appear to be PSA graded cards sometimes fake?

If you look at the following linked EBAY 63 PSA 8 Topps Sandy Koufax, look at the numbering and letters. They don't look like they usually do, but I'm not familiar enough with the history of PSA to know if they used a different type set. For example look at the 6 in the numbers, then look at a 6 in the 2nd link:

Do you see how the 6 in the 2nd example almost looks like an 8 and the number kind of bleeds ink so to speak (and I figure that's a legitimate PSA graded card), but in the first link the 6 looks more refined? Does this indicate the first link PSA 8 is a fake? That's what I'm trying to find out.

I own a 65 Steve Carlton rookie card PSA 8 and it is a real one I sent in to PSA as an ungraded card, and it came back with the hologram. At the time it was worth about 1200. But since I got mine there have been numerous PSA 8 Carlton rookie cards and the value has plummeted down to about 450. Many of those cases have the same different clearer 6's and I'm wondering if those are fake too and that's why there are so many of them. Good god, I went on there one day and there were about 20 PSA 8 Carlton rookies for sale at lower and lower prices! That seemed like an awful lot and now it appears to be happening to the 63 Koufax.

This is why I started buying unusual card sets, like 68 game, 69 decal, 70-71 supers, 71 Topps coins, because I figured there was less chance of forgeries. Until I can feel confident that fake Topps cards are not being sold in PSA cases I'm not buying any regular print cards, but hopefully somebody can talk me down. Thanks, Chris

  • Thanks for talking me down JBrules, addictedtoebay & divecchia. That clears up a lot of my confusion and concern about different PSA (generational) tags.

Note that there are an awful lot of 1965 Carlton PSA 8 cards in existence. According to the population report, there are 969 of them. That's the most 8s of any 1965 Topps baseball card. The stars have 200-500 PSA 8s. Examples....Frank Robinson 270, Al Kaline 322, Norm Cash 149, Clemente 401, McCovey 314, Rose 419, etc. There are also a ridiculous amount of 9s on that card. 170 of them. I'm not sure how you came up with $1,200 for the value of this card. It's hard to believe anyone would pay that much for it.

TheVick, I think the price reflects the population. I might be wrong, but I think it's the cheapest PSA 9 HOF RC from the 60's just because there are so many. Steve Carlton was pretty damn good so it's a card with some demand to it

As a Cub fan, I remember just how good he was. I could see the PSA 9 being worth over a grand, but not the 8.
