Ottoman Turkey gold coin of Sultan Mahmud II, accession year AH 1223, regnal year 28.
Coin date is AH 1251 (AD 1835-36)

It might be a cedad but we would need the diameter and weight to identify it further.

Wow awesome appreciate it... when weighed it was either 1.2 or 1.4 grams. Does that narrow it down

The coin is probably a cedid (1.6gm) but has lost weight due to wear and the hole.

With these types of coins one needs the diameter and weight to identify the denomination.

You should also be aware that over the past 150 years, these coins, with this specific date (1223//28) were very heavily reproduced, for jewellery purposes. Some of the replicas are really, really bad and are not truly meant to deceive either a gold buyer nor a coin collector. Others are much more accurate renditions. Most of the copies are not actually gold.

A jeweler might be able to tell if it is gold.
