OT (Sort of): Anyone into art collecting?
First off I know ZERO about art with the exception of a few episodes of education from Antique Roadshow . I'm trying to determine the current market value of a limited edition serigraph from LeRoy Nieman. I'm not sure if the art world has the equivalent of VCP but I'm trying to track down past sales without much luck. Best I can tell is the art market is as all over the place just like our cardboard. If anyone has any experience or knowledge they can share I'd greatly appreciate it.
This is the piece. (I know you're all probably shocked by the subject : "French Connection" by LeRoy Neiman is a limited edition serigraph on paper. Image dimensions are 23" x 30.75" and framed dimensions are 35.25" x 42.25." FRENCH CONNECTION was produced in 1977 and is signed and numbered plus AP's edition. The edition size is 300 (Artists Proof.)
Thanks,
Kevin

Leroy Nieman did a lot of these with different art subjects. I have one of McGwire and love it. Please note that there are certainly limited edition serigraphs to 300 or 500, but most of the works were also copied to around 5,000. I honestly don't know how to tell the difference. I assume most, like mine have an original pencil autograph by Nieman.

Thanks for the info Don. I'm definetly looking at one of the /300 artist proofs. Any idea on how to determine current market values for them?
Thanks,

I would search the big auction houses, like HA etc...for older results. I know I have seen his works sell before but not the French Connection.

Thanks for the links. I didn't realize Hertitage did art as well. Problem is some are $4k and others a few hundred. Obviously the subject matters but "City by the Bay" is $4k and Wayne Gretzky is $750. The few French Connection that I've tracked to galleries are all being offered in the $3500 range. The one I've seen at auction from 2013 went for $800. So I guess I'll probably have to wait for one to come to auction because I can't see a gallery taking anything that low and I won't be paying full gallery price.
Thanks,
Kevin

Lots,
I agree it confusing but it looks like you have a good game plan set forth. Good luck.
I think his paintings are really cool and would love to own one also but my budget is more suited to the print side:

I'm also surprised of the Gretzky at $750. I always thought the serigraphs went for $4,000 to $5,000 and the prints went for close to $500 with a print run close to 5,000 each. Have you tried ebay?

Just go to ebay and search sold auctions for Leroy Neiman and you'll find all kinds of recent sales.

Don,
Thanks for taking the time to check eBay. For me the problem is there are no recent sales of the exact French Connection lithio. The 3 that are listed have been there all for well over 6 months (which is when I started keeping track).
So it's like looking at an OPC 1979 Wayne Gretzky in PSA 10 vs OPC 1979 Morris Lukowich in PSA 10. Same year, same company / Artist, same condition / grade , completely different price range. Except in my case I have no idea which is the Gretzky and which is the Lukowich.
Thanks,
Kevin
