My first purchase of a card with the OC qualifier

In all my years of collecting cards, this is the first time I've ever purchased a card with an OC qualifier. It fills a spot in my 1971 Topps Football set. This is Ken Houston's rookie card and this guy was a great player. He's in the HOF. The card was only $12 plus shipping. I think this a really nice looking card. What do you think?

I know that it might not have typical t/b centering for an 8, but I have seen straight 8s with centering like that. Are you going to crack and resub?

That one looks great. Would not expect it to have the qualifier. Nice buy.

Presents very well. T/B centering is easily overlooked and doesn't glare at you like L/R centering.

At this point, I haven't made any plans to crack it open but that's not a bad idea.

Great looking card. Congrats on the addition. How far along are you with the set?

That's a $40.00+ card in a straight "8". Centering is probably my main focus when I buy a card. I would take that card any day. Great purchase.

The top to bottom OC on this card doesn't detract from the eye appeal at all. Great purchase.

I'm the "curmudgeon of centering" - "the Governor of Gloss" - "the Emir of edges" - "the Captain of Corners" - "the Sultan of Surface"....

I think it looks great next to some I've seen that have eluded the dreaded OC.

I question the competency of the grader(s) that gave that an 8 o/c unless the back is a complete train wreck

This one just sold for $58.00 on eBay. Which one you like better? IMO the 8o/c.

That's a great looking example of a fabulous card. You did well.

And he was a fabulous player.

I'm only about 14% but I have a lot of the major stars like Sayers, Butkus, Nitschke, Starr, Namath, Mean Joe, Lamonica, Griese, Bradshaw, Unitas, etc. I'm currently number 52 on the registry....MJB's 1971 FB Set.

  • Eh, the "OC" qualifier should never be used in my opinion unless the picture is almost coming of the card with virtually no border. Calling a card like that "OC" due to the up-down centering removes credibility from grading. I think the appeal of the OP's card is greater than the one posted further down in the thread and the up-down centering on the OP's card is no "worse" than the left-right centering on that one.

I actively collect Kirby Puckett. I have collections of Michael Jordan, Emmitt Smith, Roberto Clemente, Dwight Gooden, Tom Seaver, Errict Rhett and Evan Longoria.

8OC looks far better, I'd crack it out and send it in again, OC or Tilt cards are off the table for me but I'd take your OC anytime. Great looking card

I am sorry but that card should not have the OC qualifier. I think PSA got this wrong.

Congrats! You beat the system. Beautiful card and smart purchase.

I agree with the OC qualifier due to the top/bottom centering. However, it does still have great appeal because top/bottom centering is harder to detect especially with a borderless bottom like in this case. I think it's a good purchase as others have mentioned and something to be proud of. I don't think the OC qualifier would be removed on a re-submit without downgrading but who cares if you're happy with it?

  • Doesn't anyone else think that PSA does this sometimes to make the extra money on the chance you will re-sub the card. I've gotten some pretty sketchy returns on great cards and I think with a re-sub I might get a little better grade. I wish they provided an explanation with the grade.

t/b centering doesnt bother me nearly as much as l/r does.

and while this card "technically" does deserve the oc qualifier, the coloring, l/r centering and registration more than make up for it. eye appeal is tremendous, esp when compared to the straight eight.

    nice job!
