Does this look right to you?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1952-Topps-Mickey-Mantle-PSA-4-5-Clean-card-with-excellent-centering-/232273134369?hash=item36148ec321:g:ynQAAOSwTM5YuybK

I've own two 52 Topps Mantles in my life and have seen dozens more in magazines and online but this looks total fake to me.

The seller already has + Feedback for a PSA 3 that sold for 20K and that looks suspect also.

I'm willing to bet PSA would not re-holder if sent in.

  • Is there something specific that makes you think its not real? There are things in the narrative that lead me both ways, but nothing about the card per se.

Flip & card both look bad to me.

    Could be the camera?

I'd love to see it sent to PSA

$38,000 card, but he can't be bothered to take it out of the sleeve, or show the bottom border. :(

To me, it kind of looks like there is a card on top of a card, but maybe its the camera angle and case causing it to look that way. It not being out of its sleeve, the front photo not showing the entire bottom border and then his "explanation" as to when he got it and why he is selling it raise concern imo. However, he has plenty of feedback and looks legit. Hard to say from the photo.

Is it asking a lot for this dealer to purchase a scanner prior to posting this card for sale? Red flags abound with this one.

    Good catch OP.

Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.

100% fake. spacing between the card number, grade, and cert are wrong...also when I scan in the barcode it brings up cert #14897469, 1955 topps #44 corky valentine PSA4. Corky is probably worth more than this card.

Bought in a collection my a$$

Too bad we can't contact the 20k card buyer and let them know.

Big $ fraud across state lines using the post office is major trouble.

Can you scan the other one he sold, a pic of it is in his recent feedback..?

  • MantleFan23MantleFan23 Posts: 701 ✭✭✭✭

The other 3 looks extremely suspicious as well. The barcode is registered to a Jack Harshman card.

Well that was quite the scam, wonder why he didn't duplicate the barcodes, assuming he saw the real cards before making these lables..

Here is the current card that is for sale that sold back in Feb. 2012

If you look at his listing and then look at the card from VCP the lower left corner shows an incredible amount of rounding compared to when it sold in Feb. 2012.

Will the real owner of these Mantles please stand up....

Sad thing is someone is out 20k and has no idea

Wonder what the FBI would do if alerted? Probably not a whole lot. Maybe tell you to report it to eBay.

Definitely a bad card and a bad flip. The font and spacing on the flip are wrong, and the card is not the same one that is in the earlier slab.

I suspect the first sale of the PSA 3 was "fake" with the intent of trying to convince someone the current one was real because they would see that the seller had sold one before and got + feedback. I can't imagine anyone in the market for a 52 Topps Mantle is going to get fooled by a photoshop with a non-matching registration number, but you never know. People with more money than sense get fooled all the time.

Your right it was a fake sale. I check it out and here's the result

  • Dpeck100Dpeck100 Posts: 10,912 ✭✭✭✭✭

How can you tell it is fake from that site? Those higher priced offers I have found to be the counter offer from the seller.

  • From listing:

"I am located in Rowland Heights (25 miles East of Los Angeles), California. Local buyers are more than welcome to see it in person. "

Someone should contact the seller and try to arrange a viewing. LOL!

I just used it to look up some best offers I bought and it only shows my offers to the seller.

As for the fake sale, don't you have to pay eBay 10% of the sale price? Which in this case is $2k, so the joke's really on this guy if he doesn't end up selling anything based on his scam.

  • addicted2ebayaddicted2ebay Posts: 2,096 ✭✭✭✭

Fake cards, fake flips, fake offers, fake sales???

If the buyer doesn't pay, then the seller likely won't have to pay a FVF.

BTW, the max FVF is $750.

    Ouch someone bought that garbage.

This is wild. Wait until he downloads the PSA scanner app on his phone and scans his new card. Unless it's another fake sale to build credibility.
