Do those old/small ANACS slabs cause toning? (Peace dollar)

I didn't remember this Peace dollar being so colorful. I'm still working on lighting etc, and I failed to capture the subtler tones. Other coins in the same storage system remained unchanged--but this was just 'more' than I recalled.

    Not really.

The old NGC fatties, yes. Otherwise most slabs don't promote toning.

Not sure - its been over 25 years for some of them - anyones guess. I had an OGH Dollar I recently cracked out, dipped to remove haze, and then submitted.

I believe the storage environment is key - high humidity, heat, salt air not good for coins. Slabbed holders not necessarily airtite from what I have read.

The old hotel soap slabs are known for causing nice rim toning to varying degrees. It does seem to depend on the surfaces of the particular coin though and nowhere near what say a PCI insert can do.

Yes they can but thats not what caused the toning on the OP's Peace $

My guess is that the OP's Peace $ is from an album. Probably WR. Its MS and you can actually see where the fingerprints are on the coin where the original owner pushed it into the album spot.

WR albums also produced unattractive yellowish toning.

Definitely looks like prints involved. Maybe my memory is just a bit foggy on this one. It's been in a box (Intercept) for a few years. I don't recall when/where I bought it, only that I've had it for awhile. This is the era of slab--old. (It's a bit of a dim shot, the pictures above are more like an 'in-hand/well lit' appearance).

The OP coin does look like old Whitman blue folder dark toning. Maybe darkened a touch more at the rims by the anacs slab.

I'd tend to agree that those slabs promote nice toning. These 3 coins all came out of small ANACS holders (all were graded PR65 CAM).

    Now PCGS PR66 CAM

    Now PCGS PR67 CAM

    Now PCGS PR66 DCAM

All three look very similar in hand, it's amazing how different the toning looks in the TrueViews.

I was going to say that the oldest ANACS holders with the alpha prefix in the holder code can cause toning, then I scrolled down and saw you added the pic of the label. Those holders and the original PCI white slabs can cause toning, mostly I've seen purples and oranges and even a little green on occasion.
