Bad toning?

This coin looked like an MS62/3: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1900-P-Silver-Barber-Half-Dollar-UNC-Graded-by-PCGS-FREE-SHIPPING-/292020688748?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&nma=true&si=pb3%2BqiR24bi6y12phX5nQ7z%2FLaw%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
A dealer I know said offering under $400 on it would have been safe, I offered her $435. What was it really worth and could it straight grade or does it need to be dipped?

Interesting. The photo's don't look too alarming to me. I wouldn't dip it, if anything, it looks like it may have been dipped already. The edge toning doesn't bother me too bad, I'd like to see it in person. PCGS didn't like it for some reason...

Looks like a nice coin. My concern would be, sometimes toning was added, natural looking, to cover hairline cleaning marks. If that is the case here, then $435 was too much. If it is not cleaned, it does not look like bad toning at all from those pics.
Looks Ok to me, w/o seeing it in hand.....cheaper would be better though, since it's in a genny holder.
The lady selling it said she paid $500 and was willing to take $450, but I declined. She said she picked up a better coin at a local pawn shop for her collection.
I have bought several items from her, honest person!
Looks like the luster has dulled over time, probably from repeated dippings or an extended one. The toning looks reasonable to me, sort of what should be expected as secondary toning commences. It's not like it added any eye appeal to the coin. The real issue with that coin is the dulled luster and surface abrasions/hairlines from some mishandling.
I know it is less critical pertaining to the guarantee for the grading services to get it right on why the no grade, and submitters have no recourse if they get it wrong. I have had coins come back "environmental damage" that conserved very well. And I have seen other coins bodybagged for issues they judged as not likely a conservation option that conserve very well.
I see it did sell for $450. That is a strong price for a problem coin, if it is.
It is lackluster. I'd pay AU money for it.
I have seen a lot of these that straight graded but are butt ugly in XF and better. We have the highest population silver coins except for the moderns at the same date range as Barber 50c coins and a tiny population of Barbers in comparison. Strange.
Dipped to death and retoned in an album. Fugly.
