1883 Hawaiian Quarter Dollar
Designed by Charles Barber and struck at the San Francisco Mint
The vast majority of this scarce issue were melted when Hawaii became a US territory in 1900.
These are fascinating and scarce one year type American colonial issues. See page 420 of the 2017 Spiral Bound Red Book for more details.
This piece saw very little circulation. Lots of detail in Kalakaua I's beard and hair on the obverse, substantial mint luster remains on the reverse (see 2:00 and 9:00 in the image below).
One VERY well hidden staple scratch runs along the base of the obverse denticals at 9:00-10:00.
