Non 1/1s you would pay more for than 1/1s
It is my opinion that the most beautiful cards have come out in the past 5 years or so. Sick, insane auto/patch cards, etc. Cards destined to get BIG money. You know what I'm talking about - the 1/1's that, when they make themselves seen, angels will sing.
For me, the big three that have always stuck out are
1996 Select Certified Mirror Gold
1997 Pinnacle Totally Certified Platinum Gold
1998 Donruss Crusade Red
All of them are #'ed to 25-30, yet I would consider each to be more valuable than most (if not all) of the 1/1's out there, ever made. Why is this?
I personally think it is because they are now all about 20 years old, are huge with both player and set collectors and, simply put, have become legendary. These have been on checklists of people for, in some cases, a few decades.
What are your thoughts, and what NON 1/1 cards of your favorite player would you pay MORE for than a 1/1 of your guy ... and why?
Comments
Personally, I own zero 1/1s of my favorite player since they were all issued after his playing days and not eligible for the registry. Too much other stuff to track down to keep me busy with just that.
97 Bowman's Best MI Inverted Atomic
98 Bowman Chrome Golden Anniversary (/50) & Refractor (/5)
98-00 Stadium Club Printing Plates (all /4)
00 Stadium Club Chrome First Day Issue Refractor (/25)
are a few that come to mind.
1982 Wrestling All Stars #2 Hulk Hogan in a PSA 10. It has been almost six years since I did the interview for the SMR and said I didn't think one would ever hit. If it ever does it is obviously more desirable than any Hogan 1/1. Everyone is different but I am not a fan of the manufactured rarities. I understand why people are and if they like them more power to them. To each their own.
In many many cases, value of #/4 is greater than 1/1 due to rules of registry composition inclusion.
1/1 = panini junk
I think it is hard to "collect" 1/1 because only one person at a time can own one, they can get "lost" in collections and never see the light of day, or sometimes they never get pulled an forever live in wax. I don't worry about them and own none. Now, for a frank thomas crusade red, I would pay a kings ransom. I own the green and purple, but haven't even seen a red for sale in over 5 years.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
There are so many great looking normal cards that blow away 1/1's. I am not a big fan of patch cards since most look great but are probably fake and I will only buy "on card" autos. My biggest complaint lately is that most players aren't even autographing the cards anymore, now they just lazily scribble down a few initials most of the time, which is total BS. Topps/Panini should make these millionaires sign their names.
I am enamored with some of the SP, SSP and "variation" cards Topps put out recently. Some really great looking cards.
They call me "Pack the Ripper"
I will admit I am more interested in older 1/1 items going back to the tail end of the junk era than I am of the more modern ones. To me, late 90's 1/1 cards seemed like such a rare prize compared with modern ones, because while an individual 1/1 item from present era might be rare, the volume of how many different present day 1/1 cards makes them feel less so IMO.
1/1's aren't my thing. Pulled one once and sold it. Not a fan of things being rare because t was intentionally produced that way. If I have something rare it's because the rest of em didn't survive over time
