Hi All,
I have an opportunity to buy some cartons of baseball cards from '77 to '81 without looking at the cards from someone who's just looking to get rid of them. What's a fair price to pay for them? The outter boxes don't seem to be in great in shape but I'm assuming the inner cartons are ok. What's a fair price to pay sight unseen?

$250
$500 but I am worried they all might be cherry picked if they will not let you look at them.
Successful card BST transactions with cbcnow, brogurt, gstarling, Bravesfan 007, and rajah 424.
sight unseen
I would pay nothing
I would be afraid that this is going to be 50-100 of each year from 1977-1980 and 24,000+ 1981 Donruss and Fleer.
And like Cakes said, cherry-picked
I've asked if I can see the boxes first. The seller acquired them along with some other stuff and hasn't really gone through the boxes. That being said, they could've been cherry picked before hand too. I guess I'll have to go take a look to really know. It's an hour drive each way... I'm scared I'll buy something just to make it worth my while to have gone there!)
Are these unopened boxes or single cards?

singles. I could buy just the ones from 77-80 as well.
Honestly, I wouldn't pay for the gas and waste a couple hours for the cards. There is a very good chance that they have been picked over.

There are truck loads of cards like that available. Spend your $ on something you really value!

What's funny is after you offer the guy $250, he pulls out a a half ream printout listing each card along with the Beckett price itemized for each individual common, team, leader, etc. Turns out the book price on the lot totaled $6732.15 and he was only looking for half book.
Maybe I am the eternal optimist but there are some good cards in those sets. Two hours of your time to pick up some nice cards doesn't seem like a big waste of time. Tim Raines was just elected into the hall of fame and he is 1981. Maybe they didn't know what to pick. A lot of variations in the 1981 fleer too. No idea on price but I would atleast look at them
T222's PSA 1 or better
Before making the drive I'd be clear with the seller about what you are willing to offer "sight unseen". Most noncollectors think "old baseball cards" = "big money". You'll need to educate him on the market to disprove that. He may be shocked and expecting numbers in the 5 figures in which case you are too far apart and saved the gas for the trip.
Then if you go and he lets you look them over before you buy, bump your offer up if the stuff is good. The more he lets you look and appraise, the better your offer should be if the cards warrant it. Maybe I'm old fashioned but screwing other people just comes back to bite you.
Good luck and if you go, keep us updated. It sounds interesting.
