Population of coin required to be Registry Quality

Registry Quality, is this based on population as highest graded varies depending on series? So, my question is, what is the required maximum population level for a coin to be registry quality? Is an 1884-S Morgan in AU “Registry Quality” at 652/2341? Many collectors cannot afford a MS of this starting at $3,000. I have common date Morgans in MS 61- 64 that I would be embarrassed to admit to paying for but graded better than this AU example. Are they “Registry Quality”?

How about a 1964 Kennedy Proof in PR68, there are 1153 graded better. This seems a reasonable grade for a registry set but with 1117 graded PR69, would this be eligible as a “Registry Quality” coin designation, would the PR69 as there are 199 PR69 Cam and Dcams for this year.

Would an AG Chain Cent be “Registry Quality”? I would be more than happy to own a clean problem free AG.

What is the dividing line for “Registry Quality”?

Regstry set Quality is any coin that you would expect to see in one of the top 5 Registry sets. With the caveat that it is not a very common coin within the series. That is to say some series have highest graded coins that are relatively common. I am sure that every one has their own opinion though.

Registry set quality is any coin that you want to put in your set. Why you would care what others, especially PCGS, think is the minimum quality acceptible is beyond me.

If the coin makes you happy and you want to stick it in a registry set, then it is a registry set quality coin.

    AMEN!

I have a Morgan dollar in my set, 1890-O, Au-55. How embaressing is that? 10 in that grade, 10000 better. Until I find something better, that's staying in my set.

PS: Ever notice, when you set out to look for one morgan, you will find thousands of morgans, just never the one you need!

I didn't mean to imply that any coin is not worthy of being in a registry set. However in the context of the other threads about what should be offered on this forum for sale I felt a more specific definition was in order. Personally I would not offer a coin for sale here or say it was Registry quality unless it met some similar definition.
