Question on a W/C Commemorative 50c

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,124 ✭✭✭✭✭

I recently purchased a 1951 Washington-Carver Commemorative Half Dollar in a PCGS MS65 holder. I looked at the PCGS Price Guide and see it listed with a $175. value. My older Grey Sheet has it at $150. I bought the coin for $60. My question is: are the price guides that far off on this coin? or did I get a good deal at $60? If anyone who is familiar with Commems value wants to weigh in it will be appreciated.

The price guides are WAY off. You paid about average for a GWC in that grade.

OK, thanks. I thought it might be a scarcer date.

For a common coin like that, figure 60-70% of PCGS price guide as a liquidation value. PCGS price guide typically prices stuff like this at FULL retail, or approx 50% above dealer's cost. Since you got it for $60, there's not much to worry about. For coins that have a very thin or over-supplied markets, the PCGS price guide could be multiples above what the coin is really worth.
