This is a really interesting and rare variety of this civil war date. 1862 was one of the higher mintages of the series but finding this unique double die is very difficult. It is also one that is easy to spot, you won't need a glass to see this one. Doubling occurs on the row of beads (2 distinct rows instead of one), the tops of the headdress, and several of the letters. I am sorry my pics are so bad, I had a real tough time photographing it. I have searched for it for 15+ years and found this and one other. The pop reports bear this out. NGC shows 3@61, 5@62, 3@63, 1@64, and 1@65. PCGS has about half that many in their report. A PCGS MS63 sold in January at Heritage for $1997. Take a look at that one, the pics show the doubling much better than my pics. Mine is actually an earlier die state and shows the doubling more distinctly. The coin has great color and a very sharp strike, a few tiny field marks but could easily be in a higher grade holder. Never sent to CAC.
$899 shipped and insured.
