I will try to post with better pictures...if not the date area, is there some other area that might help with ID? THX RJ
Hard to tell. Hopefully someone might ID the variety?

If you or your friend who have the coin in hand can't see the date, I doubt that anyone is going to be able to make it out from just a photo.
Not true - the die pairings of these early coppers are very telling.
I'm not at home with my books, but one of these fellows will figure it out shortly.
Design started in 1796, and the final number has a circular top. So maybe 1798 or 1799 if you're lucky.

I think I can rule out 1799 from the obverse forelock relative to the T in LIBERTY
And it appears to be the 2nd hairstyle, so I can rule out '96 and '97.....
Verno,
If you could take some better images of your coin that
are a bit brighter & very much better focused it would
help a lot. Please try to get full clear images of the complete
reverse & obverse and a few close-ups of the rims.
I may have figured out the variety, but I could be wrong.
Is the coin corroded or has there been something applied
to it?

I saw the coin in hand yesterday, it was from an older collection(never heard that one before) and in a 2x2 dated "1799" which is why I posted here....seems the reverse was pretty solid and unfortunately the wear on the obverse centers on the last digit(intentional?) LML, I will try to get some better pics today. Seems to narrow down to 1798 and 1799, with it most likely being the former....
Like I posted above, I believe the positions of the T and Y are wrong for both the 1799 and 9/8. And with the Second Hair Style, that means by default it's a 1798, as that appeared mid-year in '98.
It looks like LML is going to try and determine the Sheldon variety for you, which I'm guessing is going to be garden variety R1 or R2.
Thanks for posting - and feel free to post any more you come across!
