Bill was killed in action 9 days later on March 4, 1945.

    He was killed while using his movie lights to illuminate the inside of a Japanese held cave. He was apparently buried either in the cave or nearby but his body was never found.

    William Genaust no doubt had his hands full that day and probably did not have the opportunity to meet many others, but among the many fellow heroes who were with him on Iwo Jima were Charles Lindberg, who helped raise the first flag, and "Woody" Williams, who earned the Medal of Honor.
