1955 Bowman Baseball

For those that are familiar with vintage baseball, would anybody care to comment on this set?

I know some may think the TV design is "tacky" but I have always liked it. The wood grain borders make it very difficult to find decent copies in high grade and there are some heavy hitters in the set with the likes of Mantle, Aaron, Banks, Kaline, and many other HOF'ers. Plus, I really think the high number umpire cards add some uniqueness.

All that being said, these cards seem very undervalued in comparison to their Topps counterparts of the same era. Any ideas of insights as to why?

The Banks was always a tough card in the past. Recently, for some reason it had fallen by the wayside.

Love this set and have been slowly working on getting the HOFs. Think people just generally do not enjoy the design as much as Topps. I personally like it better because ' 54, '55 and '56 Topps has the same headshot for virtually everyone. At least these photos are unique to the set. I hope it stays unpopular for another couple of years until I finish buying what I still need. It is similar to '62 and '71 in how difficult it is to find cards that are not chipped up along the edges.

I agree that these are very condition sensitive cards. The borders and corners chip very easily. Also, I agree that the Banks is somewhat harder to find than the other stars in the set. I bought a collection with 2000 or so of this set a few years ago. At first glance, they appeared mainly NM or better. When I sent several in for PSA grading, I found that quite a few were cut short, resulting in MC qualifiers. Others were downgraded to 6 because of tiny corner dings.

Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.
