An unexpected cool moment at the Tristar Show this Weekend

I had a great time at the show with my son and got to see him really find joy in the hobby and he also got to see me experience a huge moment of nostalgia that brought me back to my own childhood

One of the main reasons I made the drive down was to meet and get an auto from Doc Gooden. I was upset when I learned Saturday that he cancelled. Sunday when I show up to get a Rick Barry auto signed for a friend I was shocked to hear last call for Dwight Gooden. He showed after all!
I looked at his line it was almost empty. I had my item in my car I wanted to get signed. I ask the guy in charge of the line if I had time to get a ticket and get an item signed. He said "hurry, but I got you". I gave my son my Rick Barry ticket and item. I waited frantically and impatiently in the slow moving auto ticket line. I secured my ticket. I ran back to Doc Gooden and told him and asked politely if he could please wait while I got my item from the car. He was very cool and very accommodating. He said no rush take your time. I sprinted to my vehicle grabbed my item and sprinted back and as you can see from the pic below I am not a small man. I find Doc sitting with my 15 year old son talking about baseball. Doc shook my hand took a pic with me, as I recounted memories of watching him when I was a kid. What a great moment for a fan of the 86 Mets.

Great story. Doc looks awfully thin. Has he been sick?

Most people look skinny next to me. I think it is just past issues with drugs and alcohol that still haunt him, but unlike another notable autograph guest he was in great spirits and stone sober

There are too many horror stories about how horrible some players treat their fans. This is how it should be when a fan meets a player, a very memorable and enjoyable moment.

Thanks for sharing a nice story.

Wonderful to see Doc show up, as I've read too many sad stories of him not showing up for events in recent years because of his addiction troubles. Glad you got to share a cool experience with your son. B)

Doc has such a good heart. What a great story and how fan interaction should be. His 1985 season is among the best ever. Much love for Doc.

    Great story!

About 5 years ago, I was at a celebrity softball game and Gooden was supposed to be there. At that time, I had never met him and really wanted his autograph. He was one of the reasons I made a 3 hr drive to go to the game. He ended up having flight troubles and was a no show. As the game was about to finish, they came over the PA system and said he has finally arrived and if you'd like to stay in the stadium, he was on his way and would sign for anyone left. There was a pretty long line who decided to stay and sure enough, he came out and signed and talked/took pictures with whoever wanted one. He was super cool. He said they got stuck on the runway getting out of New York and missed his connecting flight. He wanted to still come even though he knew he missed the whole game and wanted to thank the fans for staying. He was very humble and accommodating, the complete opposite of what I was expecting from someone who has been through all his struggles in his personal life.

Great story! If you haven't seen the 30 for 30 on Doc and Straw, it is a bit heavy at times, but I highly recommend it.

That is awesome to hear. I had heard Rickey Henderson was a bit "different" through stories on the web, and was a little concerned it wouldn't be a good experience when we got his auto. And he was the same way. Very accomodating, took a picture with me and my son. It made the experience awesome. Honestly, how hard should it be to just fake like you are a nice guy for an hour even if you aren't ? It will be so much better for your image. But I've run into very rude athletes, so I know it happens. Glad your experience with Doc was a good one.

Well on a side note it was not my sons favorite moment. The trip was for his birthday and to see a Rockets game. He picked one guy to get an autograph from. In my opinion the greatest center I ever watched.

  • REXVOS--- Well, I'm glad both of you were very happy at the show you two shared. A fine father & son outing, to be sure.

It is my firm belief that retired athletes can strongly enhance, or damage, their image during show appearances. In many vital respects, it's "game day" all over again. If they would stop and consider---many of the people that are paying well for their autograph are doing so because they were big fans of the given player, and being friendly, courteous, and giving a good strong, legible autograph means so much to each fan. You might be in your mid-30s to your 70s when you patiently stand in line to meet your boyhood hero. Yet, you become that anxious, excited little boy again in their presence, and each second is being emblazoned in your memory, combining with those cherished childhood memories.

Somehow, this needs to SCREAM solemnly in their ears before they set foot at the show where they are about to play "the retired game" therein.

    Awesome story and great memory!

  • It looks like he is wearing a baggy shirt to cover a swolen abdomen. I would bet he is having kidney or liver issues.
