To grade or not.....Downfall of being a BBCE ripper

Over past 10 years have ripped lot of BBCE - 2 boxes of 78 and 79 OPCs, box of 75 minis, 80 topps and several 81 and 82 topps.....As expected, I am left with quite a few stars that are somewhere between 7s-9s.....Sharp cards in lot of cases, but it now comes down to this:
Is it worth grading a 75 mini Steve Garvey?
What about a 78 OPC Carlton?
81 Topps Henderson?
You get the idea.
The decision is easy decision when you get a 75 mini Brett (got an 8, which was nice). I am sure we have all been there with this decision....I now have 200 cards I would like to grade, but doesn't seem worth the cost. What does everyone do with their in between cards?

I just end up trying to build a very hi end set with them. It makes it more fun for me that way, rather than having a stack of random cards. A lot of HOF cards from the 70's are worth grading in 8's though. It won't make you rich, but they will usually sell for more than the cost of grading. So, my general stance is if I think a card has a chance, even 50-50 of hitting one grade above the minimum required to make my money back I will send it. For example, a 1975 Shmidt psa 7 is a 10-15 card. By the time you spend money on shipping it to psa, listing it on ebay, paying ebay fees, etc. it's barely worth subbing. But if I think there is an outside shot of the card getting an 8, which is a 40 card, I will sub it.

I enjoy ripping but was left with the same quandary. I knew I wouldn't be ripping enough to put together complete, pack fresh sets, so I ended up buying mid-grade raw sets from 71-80 (I already owned most of the 81-90 sets). Now when I do a rip, most cards are at least upgrades to my raw sets. I take some solace in that when I get crushed.
I love building high grade raw sets from BBCE group rips!!!
I've accumulated boxes of pack fresh raw singles from pack rips over the years, most of which took place years ago when prices were much lower, lol..
I put together raw sets in binders and sell the duplicate raw cards in lots on ebay. Grading fees these days pretty much preclude submitting any card that isn't worth at least $8 after grading, with the exception of those cards in PSA 8 or better grade I still need to fill holes in my graded sets.

Great thread, I am in the same boat.
Do dealers get a better price when submitting in bulk like in the coin world with PCGS?
