Way off topic - Can someone identify this artillery shell case?

I know there is a lot of smart people here so I thought maybe someone could identify what kind of shell this is and what shot it. I have had it since the late 1960's. It is 23 inches high and the base is 5 1/4 inches wide.

I believe it is a 76MM Shell made in 1943. Probably used as a tank or anti tank shell during WWII.

There was an army base back in the 1960's, possibly Fort Monmouth because that was not too far from our house, that use to dump lumber from I am guessing crates. On Saturdays they was allow people to come get all they could carry in their vehicle for $2. There use to be lots of small caliber casing laying all over the ground with the lumber. Since I was probably about 6 years old I would always collect those and bring them home. One day my dad picked up a piece of lumber and this shell case was under it. I never seen another one there like it.
