Boy did I get a big grading shock!
I recently sent some more coins that belong to a relative to Great Collections for its "grade and auction" program. All went to PCGS and only one was a foreign coin, but what a grade shock it hit me with!
The coin is a toned 1905 Philippines peso. I'm a Morgan dollar guy, so pretty much all I knew about them that they existed. When I tried to grade it I pretended it was a Morgan, and because it is toned... well, I pretty much just guessed on the low side. I told my relative I thought it was an AU58 that would bring $125 or so.
Ha ha ha ha!!!
It came back from PCGS as Proof-64 and 1905 is the second lowest mintage in the series, just 471 pieces. As near as I can tell from limited Heritage auction records, its value is more like $2,000+. Maybe a lot +? I have no clue.
It's coin number 425286 in the auction if anyone would like to take a look.
