10 Years Away From Hobby - Price Changes

I stopped collecting sportscards 10 years ago but haven't forgotten the hobby. I've just been busy with other pursuits, like raising a US Navy recruit and collecting Ancient Roman coins.

Just for kicks I cracked open my spreadsheet for my 1967-1978 baseball collection which was last updated in Dec 2006. In that spreadsheet I have SMR values from Nov 2006. Here are values for the key cards of that 67-78 era:

Looking at these I sure wish I had jumped on the NM Rose RC. I notice that our favorite online auction has several sold PSA 7 cards going for what the PSA 8 used to go for.

Set values (which I collect) don't appear to have increased as drastically. But it appears to me that graded cards for key players have done well.

Just an FYI... Cumulative inflation over that 10 year period: 19.7%

Final thought: This site kept my login information including profile pic for 10 years even though I wasn't active, proving that the Internet Never Forgets!

    Assuming SMR was accurate

Here is VCP for 2006 and 2016 for the Rose Rookie in PSA 8 and PSA 7. A great return on investment.

Welcome back jskirwin! I remember seeing your username years ago back in 04 and 05 when I was just a lurker and before I joined the forums. It's always nice to see an original ie veteran member post after they haven't posted in years, especially with all the newbies posting on here lately. Nothing against them as of course everyone is welcome but it's us old timers who made this forum what it is today (well what it used to be :'( ). (present company excluded of course :p ). Hope to see you post more frequently!

Thanks Mike! This used to be quite the hopping place. Many good times were had!

It almost hurts to look at that but I suppose rising values is good for the hobby overall. Especially if you happen to own that card in NM 7 or higher.

If you preface an insult with "Nothing against them" it's still an insult. If you ever want the forum to regain this long lost glory that is often mentioned by "old timers" it's probably best not to insult those who are new additions trying to add to the conversation.

    Welcome back!

    Geez js! Welcome back!

I remember your name and you posting. Didn't you have an icon/avatar that was some kind of a cartoon animal - like a bear?

I'd have to say the hobby changes but in a way, the more it changes? The more it stays the same.

    Looking forward to your posts.
