I came across the picture shown below. After doing a photo overlay, it looks like the picture matches exactly to the 1986 donruss shown on the left.

The original auction from several years ago states the following:

Photo Description
You are bidding on an original press photo from 1986 featuring Jose Canseco Oakland Athletics . Photo is 8" x 10" in size.

Photo Condition
This photo originates from the archives of the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Daily News, Detroit News, and Sport Magazine. Most photos have never been seen by the public. These photos are not reproductions or reprints.

My question is this: What the heck is this? Is this an original photo of the 1986 Donruss card that Donruss licensed? Why wouldn't it be color? Any information greatly appreciated!

    these were photographs that were issued to news outlets to be used in conjunction with feature articles, etc....It's not an original per se, because identical copies were sent to other papers, etc.

    @Ironmanfan thanks for the answer! I have never seen it before, anywhere else, so I wondered about it. I guess perhaps it was an original used for a specific newspaper, since there are hand written marks perhaps? I thought it may have been a stadium giveaway, but if it was, then there would be thousands out there, and surely several would have surfaced. Were all newspapers allowed to use it? Also, do you know if Donruss got its hands on it during the process at some point to use it and license it that way? I am confused why it is the same pic.

    I'm sure all the major newspapers had access to these....Donruss didn't employ photographers; they purchased photos from independent professional photographers...Whoever took the picture, had it used a couple times

    Thanks again for your help! This ended up being from the newspaper archives, so while it may not be the only one that was made, it was the original one used for the publication it was sent to, and the fact that it is the 86 donruss picture, I decided it had to be in my collection.

    I have a lot of these of authors (Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Steinbeck, et cetera) and a sports one (Ripken FF).
