Do you get unsolicited registry offers?

"Hi, I noticed you need a 1995 such & such for your registry collection. I have one for $xx. Let me know. - Bob"

How do you respond to this politely. I'm very leary of sending money to someone who initiates a transaction this way but I may need the coin. Any experiences with this you can share?

  • I don't get many offers. I used to keep my email address private. Now I have a seperate address just for this purpose. If you don't recognize the seller you could politely ask to look at the coin on approval. Then the risk would be all theirs. The few times this has happened to me I was able to recognize the seller.

I get them every once in a while. BTW I get more from E-Bay auctions then from the registry board. But I do get them, and if they have a certified coin at a good price.... Well that works for me....image

I've gotten offeres like that. I'm glad to recieve them which is why I have my e-mail posted at the top of my registry page.

I agree with you about being leary, though. If the seller is Pay-pal verified, I have no worries. Also, if I can see an e-bay screen name WITH THEIR EMAIL, I feel safe. If it's just Joe Smow with an expencive coin. I probably wouldnt buy it.

I get them sometimes, and appreciate them. Sometimes that's the only way a low pop coin gets offered.

If you don't know the seller, you might post a thread here on the Board and ask for comment. Between us, we know almost everyone who sells registry stuff.

  • I've gotten these offers---typically (at least the ones I've received), they are from someone who has upgraded his set---many times I have even been able to see the "updated" tag on his registry set. And, usually they are a name I recognize, either from this board or the registry.

I've only got a couple of unsolicited offers, but in both cases, were dealers hoping to drum up some want list business. Haven't had anyone offering individual pieces.

I get them once in a while but not too often. I see that thier prices are full retail and since I am a dealer I pass. My registry set is not the most important thing is my life. Most offers seem to be fair retail prices.

  • I have not gotten any yet. if I did i would ignore them, I don't buy anything that I did not initiate the transaction for.

  • I have had quite a few, it has been a great source to be able to get coins you might not be able to find. I personally have had 100% great deals, and would do it again if I need the coin....

Matt- I love your "new" Kennedy set, but do have one concern. What the heck is that 89-P in MS63 doing surrounded by all those Superb GEMS?

I don't have a Registry Set, however, I must confess that I initiated contact with several Registry Set owners about one coin I had owned. It was a very tough, key date coin in high grade and I only contacted Registry Set owners who needed the coin, who listed their emails in their Sets and who also had a note asking to be contacted if there were a coin for sale that they needed. I provided each person with a scan after they requested it and each person also received a lengthy appraisal (written by me) of the coin's attributes as it appeared in hand. I also offered the coin slightly below market value and shipped it on approval before I asked for payment. I think I contacted four people, all were happy to get the email and all wanted the image and analysis of the coin. It sold relatively quickly to one of them and everyone seemed to be happy about it, including me.

  • I had a 1996 PCGS MS69 $25 GOLD that I didn't need as my collections are all 1 oz. coins , so I checked who needed 1 and found that GOLDENDREAM ( Turboman38 ) needed it for his collections as he had 3 sets going with no 1996's .I sold it to him for what I had in the coin . He was happy to get it and I made a friend to boot . I see nothing wrong with trying to help some one update or improve their set if a person needs a coin that you have at the going price , as they may be looking for it any way . Myself that is the reason that I put my email address on my sets.

Checking David's sets the 1996 MS69 that I sold him is the only 1996 MS69 that he has in his 3 sets as of today .

  • I, for one, like to receive offers from folks who have coins I need for my registry set. I have purchased several coins this way and have never been dissapointed with the results. A lot of times, these were coins that I have been actively looking for so--KEEP THOSE OFFERS COMING!!!image
  • Pat you still make me smile, your the only one that caught my filler coin, MS 63 sounds great in some series, but this one is embarrassing soon to be replaced, but not sure if it will be that hard to find MS 67 89 P just yet....image that price scares the s#@^ out of me when I think of the old days,,,,
