pick your morgan preference, ms65dmpl v. ms66pl

So would you go with a 65 dmpl or a 66 pl? Whatever the consensus answer is, I think the weighting needs to reflect it. Personally, my preference is for a 66pl, for the simple reason that I think the difference between a 66 and 65 is more important than the difference in reflectivity between a dmpl and pl. The weighting system, however, penalizes me for this preference. So, I am wondering where the rest of you come out on this one.image

  • I am not sure what the wieghting system is for proof like Morgans, so pardon my ignorance. I would think a 65 DMPL would equal a 66 PL, just like a 65 DCAM equals a 66 Cam on the modern proofs I am more familiar with.

I would pick the one with the most frost! How is that for an answer? I understand that the deep mirror proof likes are more expensive so must be more desired by collectors. Personally I like proof likes because they have better luster and any nicks or ticks in the fields are better hidden. But with a 66 there wouldn't be many of those anyway.

    I'd take 65DM over 66PL.

OK, OK,,,,I'll take them bothimage I would also prefer the DMPL. If pricing is the measure, it would mean several gradesimage Besides DMPL's are much rarer than PL's, of course every DMPL is a possible PL and vice-versa....if ya know what I meanimage

I have seen some PL that look DMPL sooooo I guess that I would take the MS66PL over the MS65DMPL. It's a cleaner coinimage

What ever happened to buying the coin that appeals to you the most? I am one of those that doesn't get all excited over most DMPL's because they magnify any rub or tiny scrapes. I prefer 66-67's PL with clean cheeks. Obviously a lot of you will disagree, but it's only my preference not a recommendation.

that is a very hard question to answer first i would need to see both coins in person is the dmpl cameoed? is it hi end for the grade? is it a better date with none certified higher? waht is the overall lookmof the coin? what are the depths of the mirrors? super watery deep like an 81 s or shallow like an 81 0?? is it fully struck? yes some dmpl coins are not fully struck. same goes for the pl both coins need to be seen "sight seen" to make a true determination now in general if i had to take a guesstimate at your question i would take the 65 dmpl

That's an easy question for me.

DMPL. I can see the difference in contrast easily. Could I notice the one grade point difference? Maybe. But maybe not.

  • I'll take the 66pl, it should be a complete coin, with more strike. If I wanted my morgans to reflect, I'd buy proof morgans, IMO.

Deep Mirrored VAMS!!!!! All the way. A lot of the PL coins are only truly PL on one side.

It would also depend on the year in question.

At first I was going to select 66PL, but after reading all the comments here, which added to my knowledge of Morgans, I think I'd pick the 66DMPL. Of course, if I had 2 coins to choose from, I'd probably compare them with each other and decide which one I think has the most eye appeal, regardless of the grade.

This is tough, as you would have to view the coins. PL (and DMPL moreso) show marks so well. sometimes a non-prooflike coin is nicer as the marks do not show up. I would have to see each to decide which I would prefer, but I love the clean DMPL's (and DCAM's even more)

A true DMPL is really underrated. Morgan PL's aren't really that tough. I'd go with the deepest mirrors. One point in grade at that level -- which isn't that high for a Morgan -- is no big deal.

Of course, deep mirrors and deep cameo would be an even bigger treat!
