    I would have guessed he was older... Nonetheless a standout in so many ways besides his talent on the field.

    I thought he was a bit older, too, but only because I hadn't bothered to do the math. Walked right out of high school in 1953 into the majors and never looked back. Incredible.

    And he was so good, they named a type of battery after him :) (old family joke)

    I love the fact he went straight from high school to the Tigers. Reminds me of Robin Yount's HOF plaque:
    An every day major leaguer at age 18.
