Questionable color grade from PCGS

Hello all,

I recently sent some coins to PCGS for grading. This was the first time for me. One of the coins that I sent was a 1910 Liberty nickel that I purchased from a Paul Simms catalogue in 1990. It has a bluish color toning on both sides. Also appears that the toning may be from a finger print on the obverse. The coin should have fetched a grade of at least MS-63, but instead it came back with 91 N-1 which by PCGS definition is questionable or artificial color for copper. I always thought this coin was quite attractive. Anyone else out there ever experince something like this? Would it be worth sending to NGC?

Just because it is attractive toning, doesn't mean it is "natural" toning...PCGS can be especially tough on toned coins. Do a search through past threads on these forums (especially US Coin Forum) and you will find much discussion of artificial toning. That may help you. You might also do a search regarding others' experiences with Paul Simms' coins. If someone has a reference to that big black list of dealers who have committed mortal sins against coin collectors...Bikingnut might benefit from that....I seem to recall Paul SImms being on that list...if not, my mistake!

  • Welcome Bikingnut!!

You would do well to heed Monsta's advice.

For the cost of trying to get your Liberty Nickel in a holder 5 times you could buy one already in a holder. You have already tried once. I'd probably just enjoy the coin as is or buy a capital plastics holder.

Post a scan so we can see the color. Generally speaking NGC "likes" color better than PCGS.image
