So it doesn't appear it actually sold. I was watching another lot (1851 50c MS65 lot 306) that was listed as "sold" this past weekend at $9693. It stayed that way for a couple days. Now it says "passed" as well. 18 of the AD Buffs show as "passed." 3c silvers show 6 out of 8 passed. 5 out of 9 seated quarters show passed. 17 of 19 Proof Barber quarters listed as passed (14 of the 17 were CAC and most graded 67/68).

Got the same e-mail and just went back and checked it...you're right, it isn't included in the 'Unsold Lots Listed for Sale' list...
Well something is screwy. Only 3 proof Barber quarters show up on the unsold list....and 17 show up as "passed" in the auction archives. And there's no doubt in my mind the 1851 half I mentioned went from showing a price realized to "passed."
And, while many suggest the buyer paid way too much for this Buffalo nickel, it appears the seller felt it was worth even more and the lot appears to have failed to meet reserve. And, the seller may have been right - remember a 1938 Jefferson Nickel in top grade is roughly a $20,000.00 - $25,000.00 coin! HAHAHA!

Maybe it's just a "passing" fancy. If the "unsold" list is accurate, that's over a 92% sell through rate. That would be impressive in the current market.

Ahh. But that 1938-d MS68 Jeff would be a "Wondercoin approved" MS68. Not an easy thing to get. Interesting that the PCGS price guide shows a regular 1938-d Jeff in MS68 at $3,000....and a Full Steps 68 at $6500 (pop 1).
RR: Interesting... I seem to recall the coin (38-D Jeff in 68FS) coming to auction (I thought Heritage) and purportedly selling for $20,000+. Now, not a trace of the sale? Very interesting ... so for now, it's just a "$6,500 coin" (wherever it is and whatever happened to it).

Ah man, they were having so much fun speculating and degrading and you come ruin it all.
Please... Save The Stories, Just Answer My Questions, And Tell Me How Much!!!!!
I choose to believe I understand it just fine and will not defend that. Do you have any high end graded coins?
You mean like owning dozens of PF MS66/67/68 Seated and Barber coins over the years? Then yes. My best coin ever was a MS67 1867-s quarter....owned if from 1986-2004...it's currently PCGS MS67 CAC and finest known by 3 points. I've had my share and done my research, usually long before anyone else had.
Crack it out, sell it at auction raw, and see where it ends up. That is your own advice.
Andy may have seen more high grade buffalo nickels than almost anyone in the last twenty years. When I was putting my set together, I always enjoyed speaking to him and bought a few of my set from him. A straight shooter that understood the Buffalo market very well.
I probably saw this 38-D although I don't remember it. I do think Andy disagreed with JA on a few Buffalos so the fact this 38-D didn't sticker does not surprise me. The Angel Dee pedigree will stand for something when it comes to Buffalos.
This coin I suspect has great luster and is a little soft in spots on the edges. IMO this is one series where strike should matter a bit more than in others so I probably would not have bought it as a 68. But to get a 68 in a buffalo requires great luster and color. I assume that is what led to this 68. Color in Buffalos is very dangerous but I would trust Andy to be discerning.

Someday we will wake up to our latest edition of Coin World or Numismatic News to the excitement of the first slabbed pcgs 1938-d buffalo nickel in MS69. And soon thereafter an ngc ms69 will show up.!! Imagine the action that will generate at a future heritage auction when the registry set aficionados go nuts!! Be the first to have an ms69 slabbed buff in your registry set! Maybe a hundred grand or so??
Gonna happen, It will, someday. Trust me!!

Didn't have to. I sold it at auction back in 2004 in the NGC MS67 holder. The coin sold itself as the finest known and brought a record price. Went into the finest all-time seated quarter collection. Had the coin been raw or still in the old PCGS MS66 rattler? It still would have brought about the same money. Different era than 2016 though.
That was a far different circumstance than a MS68 1938-d Buff where tens of thousands of gem examples are slabbed. For my coin there was only a single one above MS64 and only 8-10 or so uncs total. My point was that a coin's value should ideally be somewhat repeatable regardless of holder or even if raw. That was and is the case for my coin where 80-90% of the value comes from the raw coin itself, independent of the holder. It's NOT necessarily the case for a 1938-d MS68 buff where the holder could be assigning up to 80-90% of the coin's value. Would the same toner Buff in a 67+ holder bring within 50% of the current price? Would it bring $10K-$13K raw? That's how you determine if the coin or the plastic is assigning the value. If you don't want to know....then obviously you don't crack it out.

I have seen any number of pcgs (and some ngc) ms67 buffs that were so darn nice I would stand them up against any of the ms68’s that are floating around. Would rather have a nice ms67 1938d all day instead of an ms68, which to be honest I really cannot afford.

Darn, you are correct. Good eye! The nicks don't bother me as a MS-68 is two points from perfection.
There are three tiny specks with "reaction rings" on the surface of the obverse. They should develop more over time. Still, it's a pretty coin.
When I look on the Legend auction web site for this coin, it says "Lot was passed"???
Hold the presses.

Well... I started my chase for 68.
Went to a 30 table show today and picked up 4 raw, modestly toned 1938d Buffalo Nickels. One looks D/D
See ya at the party!
I don't do well with colors, it looks yellow and gray to me. So I just stick to white or brown for unc. and brown and gray for circulated.

Anyway, IMO ICG tends to be more conservative on high grade "vintage" coins than PCGS. Good Luck!
