1986 Fleer Basketball Box Auth by GAI or Auth by BBCE?

Hi all,

Just trying to gauge the general public preference. Which one would you prefer to buy?

1) 1986 Fleer Basketball Box authenticated and sealed by GAI (When GAI was still in business) or

2) 1986 Fleer Basketball Box authenticated and wrapped by BBCE Steve.

And how much do you think the price of the boxes differs?

Thanks all.

I'm no expert, but I think it's like buying a gold eagle (BBCE) vs a silver one.

Well, since Steve authenticates all unopened for PSA, I think this question is equivalent to asking: Which would you pay more for ... A Mantle graded GAI 8 or one graded PSA 8? I think you can answer that quite easily.

The ONLY thing that matters is GAI claiming FASC designation? BBCE cannot obviously do that and more than likely its a frankenstein box, but the reliability that BBCE is truly unopened vs GAI is not comparable.

I buy a ton of BBCE and today they're clearly the best so don't get me wrong but I choose the GAI box for two reasons.

    1. It was graded a long time ago plus encased which protects the box and packs very nicely and it also displays very well.
    2. It can probably be had for a slight discount to BBCE pricing.

The above statement broke my brain. Could you perhaps make what you said maybe just a little bit clearer?!?!?! :o

I'd love to know specifics if you'd care to elaborate.

  • Thanks for all the reply guys! I am also curious if GAI labelled with sealed from a full case was indeed true or not.

Sorry. I simply was asking are we comparing an FASC Gai box to a BBCE wax box that has coined the term "frankenstein" due to the packs being brought together from several sources/boxes after jordans may have been found?
If we are then it isn't a comparison in my opinion, but drj, if accurate, throws a kink in that with saying they have labeled fasc when indeed not.

I was merely gauging the risk factor between actually authenticating a box and making sure it is or is not frankenstein(The way BBCE does) OR GAI's task of simply unboxing a sealed case and loading them into individual slabs. It was presumed GAI didn''t need to be an expert at authenticating anything really so the risk would seem to go down, but drj's point raises the risk substantially on trust.

End result - The only smart way to go are the wax boxes that show BBCE designation of being of the same pattern and wear on wrappers and all stickers accounted for thrice+. It seems to be the absolute best result one can expect until a sealed case is found.

Totally agree. Look for "Wax Box" designation on the label underneath. The "36 Pack Box" like here: (http://www.hugginsandscott.com/cgi-bin/showitem.pl?itemid=13325) are frankenstein boxes.

Sometimes you just need to take someones word for it. I would assume it probably a sticky situation if he elaborated on the above. I guess it comes down to do you believe djr or not. I believe him.

Yes, but OTOH if you are going to make a statement like that, you should probably provide some support for the assertion. JMO.

GAI had their fair share of issues on the customer service end, but I have successfully crossed dozens of packs from GAI to PSA, and have opened quite a few with very few issues. At least with the first generation silver flip holders. I also bought many GAI graded packs from Steve over the years before PSA began grading unopened.

I firmly 2nd this. I trust djr based on his history here, but GAI is a defunct company so if there is something to share then by all means share it.!

I once sent a case of 1985 fleer baseball to gai and they put from a sealed case on the holders. I sold off most of the boxes and kept one for myself. I liked the early days of gai.
