I see the 1919 DDO dime is now required in the Complete Merc Variety Set

Just looking around today and I noticed PCGS has updated the Complete Mercury Dime Variety set to include the 1919 DDO dime.

    I believe it's right at 20 known.
Not all would be Registry eligible. Raw, details, etc...
This may stir the pot now that they're included in that set.

I think what the ones you see for sale have prices way high for them. Many will leave that slot empty. The 1945 ddo is much tougher, and the couple that traded went for way less money.

Are there 20 collectors of varieties ?

  • fcloudfcloud Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭

There are about 20 in the registry sets. I know there are others out there not posting their sets.

I keep the 1st post updated with the census/condition census/sales history. Up to 20 right now total. Think last few posts in the thread was sandman70gt asking and getting it in the variety set.

I sent an update last week to all the experts, still no word on the Redbook, and seems the CPG is still about a year away, but at least the registry is a step. Rick Snow still has the Top Pop on eBay, might increase interest for him now with that coin.

22 registry sets shown, 4 have 95% or higher completion, 10 with 50% or more completion.

Sandman appears to be the person who asked to have the DDO included in the set. (only set showing one) With only 8 coins in his set, he has set the requirement for the other 23 participants to garner an example. One of the reasons I don't do a date/mm set anymore. (moving target)

Not sure how much of a moving target it is, but I hadn't followed the Variety Set much in the past. Greg or Tony will probably know.

I definitely think it deserves a spot in the Variety Set though, as I see it as one of the top varieties, maybe just behind the 42/41.

I'm curious of the completed sets, how many were past purchasers of the dime in completed sales - have to see who adds theirs to the sets. If not, there aren't a lot out there. Of the 20, 8 are Straight-Graded PCGS, 6 are Straight-Graded NGC, 2 are raw, likely to be straight-graded, and there are 4 problem coins (Likely not for the Registry). With only 3 Straight-Graded VF or higher right now, not sure if the registry folks would go after VGs or Gs, but who knows.

The 1919 ddo totally belongs in the variety set. Its doubling is more significant than any of the other dd's in the set.

And yes at the current time I have only have 8 coins of the 108 needed, but I had 6 only a few weeks ago. You gotta start somewhere. I'm new to registry, is is customary to wait til you own most of a set before posting them?

If you owned a coin such as this would you want it in the only set it fits in?
Wouldn't you want it added like all the other dds and rpms before it?
Would owning it push you a little to do something you had thought about doing anyway?

My set will never be number 1, but isn't the thrill of the chase why we collect anyway?

The doubling is so strong that it should be included, regardless of scarcity. And it might turn up a few more pieces.

The 1919 DDO very much belongs in the set. It should be interesting to see how many more start to come out as people search for them. I have no knowledge of what is going in the CPG, but it belongs there, too. The more interest in the set the better. It is definitely a fun set to complete.

The 1919 DDO is the only variety in the series I haven't had.
