buddha/monk coin? with image 365kb
.
have a round "coin" depicting The Buddha on one side in the meditative position with flames/ora surrounding with nothing else on the Buddha side and what appears to my untrained eye to be a host of micro mandarin characters on the other.
1/8-1/4 thick, smaller than US quarter, bigger than nickel. cupro-nickel (silverish color)?
no dates, words etc. plain edge.
i checked the world catalogs for 1901/2001 but it looks like an 1970s-2000 item. wild guess.
japan, singapore, thailand, cambodia and a few others. many google searches.
perhaps some monk-ish item? looks like legal tender imo.
seems like i've seen one before. those micro-mandarin? characters are unique for a coin item.

Legal tender would have a denomination and issuing authority (ie country). This looks like some kind of temple token.
Yep, it's not a coin. And without any kind of weight or fineness mark, it's not meant to be a bullion piece, either.
I would assume a religious medal or amulet of some kind. I would likewise assume, from a position of ignorance, that the Chinese writing on the reverse are part of the teachings of Buddha.
Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, "Meditations"
Apparently I have been awarded one DPOTD.
I agree that it's a temple token. Probably some kind of prayer on the reverse. It's a bit hard to see the Chinese characters, but they don't appear to be Japanese. I just can't tell if the characters are traditional or simplified Chinese, which would help pinpoint the country.

tyvm. will put it in a flip and mark it as such. then into a box and storage it goes. may do an acetone soak first.
