Has anyone filed a numismatic insurance claim on a lost package via USPS?

My express mail package is 2 days late on coins well into the 5 figures. It's on the receiving dealers insurance. What is the typical turnaround or success on being made whole? How much time will need to elapse before the insurance covers you? This is not USPS insurance.

I'm just worried because I am in between purchases and need the funds to pay off another coin which I sold these for.

It would depend upon the dealer's levels of coverage. Dealer policies allow for certain deductibles and require specific ways of packaging. They may also prohibit delivery by various methods, specific zip codes or certain target delivery dates. These bits of information vary from dealer-to-dealer and I would be on the phone with the dealer to work out the details. Good luck.

Is the package lost, or late???? USPS is notorious for late deliveries.

My insurance requires (I think) 15 days to pass, then there is a deductible. I'm guessing a claim would take a minimum of 30 days from the date of loss to be paid.

    Hopefully the package shows up

The dealer is well covered and it was shipped exactly as specified. I will wait another day or so to reach out to the dealer. The package is merely late, but 2 days late on a 1 day service is a bit worrisome. It's usually like clock work with Express.

It went through a distribution center in my state over night followed by a vague "In transit to destination" at 4 am the next morning. No location specified and it's been sitting like that for 2 days. Dealer has not received it.

    Be patient.

It is advisable to be patient with many USPS packages and this is especially true for Registered Mail, which many folks seem to think will just zip right through the system. However, my experience with Express Mail is that the package gets delivered on time, every time and this situation would make me worried, as well.

If you need the money now, insurance will not help you.

Jelly side up is 2 weeks, for the amount you are talking, maybe 6 - 15 weeks.

I'd file an online complaint with the usps; fill out to/from addresses, and all other pertinent information with your contact information. You could also take the matter up with your local postmaster. What would concern me especially are readily fenced coins like semi-numismatics, $20 and $10 gold coins, rather than esoteric rarities with rare dates. Thieves are looking for fence-able items not hard to value rarities.

for express mail, 2 days late would be an outlier but not unheard of.

you also need to check the scheduled delivery date on the receipt. if one or both of you are in the boonies, it might take til the day after. Also, the very small upside is if it is past the delivery date, you get a refund on the express mail shipping cost. however, file for that really fast as I and another person on here have seen the online system be edited to show on time deliveries when we know they weren't.

insurance issues? since it is on the dealer's insurance it is up to him to file and up to him to be told when to file.

you're in moderate nail biting territory for me, assuming the 2 days late is correct with respect to the PO's printed delivery date. on the other hand, many here, including me, have had surprises and late packages turned up.

Try going to the post office.

I happen to have a small one full of friendly and helpful (!!!) clerks. I had an express package get delayed by a day or two recently with the 'in transit' comment. It was to a dealer on his insurance come to think of it.

Basically, the local clerk was able to pull up the shipping details and the package was moving along just fine...just a day or so late. Just knowing it was moving correctly was enough to calm me down and everything was fine.

But I do know they have a 'super secret tracking program' that is more up to date than the one that shows up on the website for the unwashed public.

I wish you could find out how they access that. my very, very helpful staff seem to have the same info as online.

They access it from whatever computer/machine they use to do the transaction. I know my postmaster well and he does it all time time for me when I have an issue. Had a priority mail package take 11 days to get from PA to TX. He says it was stuck in a facility that was not listed on the regular website tracking. ...

they know how but may not want to take the time to do it. No special handshake or code word's needed.

a few years ago I had a package go missing (30 days). Saw my local postmaster, filed insurance claim, got paid in just a few days. Then the package came in. Brought the check back. It was perfect timing
