Jefferson Nickel Variety of the Week - 1941-S Large S, FS-502 (RPM#2)
I missed posting my variety of the week on Friday. It must not have been a big deal, as no one sent me any nasty text messages! I have posted about this variety previously, but it's been some time ago. I love the 1941-S Large S variety anyway and then the Cherry Pickers crew added this sub-variety, the Large S RPM-002 (FS-501), which added a little more excitement. I was quite disappointed to find out that in the 20+ uncirculated examples I had, there were no RPM-002's amongst them! I checked with a few fellow collectors and again no examples. I find it interesting that the Large S variety, which has been on a lot of watch lists, has not produced more examples (both MS and non-MS) to date.
My example below is one of the two circulated coins in my Set. The other being the 1943-P DDO FS-103 (AU55). I am baffled that to date there are only 2 MS examples with the remaining 6 in lesser circulated condition. My hope is with this post, some of our Forum members will discover a few more MS examples and share the wealth. My only request is to wait until I find one first!
Happy hunting

I too have always been fond of the Large S variety, ever since I "discovered it" as a ten year old (at least I thought I did!)
I have managed to acquire several rolls of them over the years.
The RPM is really a toughie.
Lance,
There are 2 MS66 examples, but neither were on the bay. Someone has listed a lower graded VF or XF for buku bucks. Obviously total insanity. I would not by one of the MS66 examples for the money being listed for. These will show up and I plan on being one of the folks that Cherries one!
All varieties have a certain amount of "coolness" to them...this is no exception.
