Can you imagine a set of these lost coins? Wow!

I lost a pocket piece on a flight once (actually twice - two separate coins) and it was a nice 1879cc dollar.

    Registry: CC lowballs (boblindstrom), bobinvegas1989@yahoo.com

When did they lose them and did you have any recourse. Just curious.

A couple months ago, and no recourse. I did not get insurance on the package. I ship many many packages up to a couple hundred dollars, so am "self insured", meaning the money I save not buying insurance pays for the occasional lost. It just sucks THIS is the package that went missing, since I cannot really replace two uniquely toned gold coins.

USPS was not helpful at all, either. Even if the package was damaged, the coins should still be SOMEWHERE. They made it to a sort facility and never left. It would be nice to recover the gold value at least, but I could never get the consumer affairs office to call me back.

  • I'm a little embarrassed to tell my story to the public but here it is.

It happened at a FUN Show in Orlando a few short years ago when I left a bag with two fellow coin club members while I retrieved the car.  When they came out of the building, I saw what I thought was my bag as they placed their stuff in the trunk.  Upon arriving at our motel five miles away, I grabbed the bag that I thought was mine.  My buddy said it was his...it was his.  In full panic mode, we raced back to the convention center to look for mine.  On the way I got a phone call from my wife at home saying she had received a call from Heritage Auctions. They had found my bag on a bench in front of the auction room with my bidder card and coins in it.  They traced the bidder card to my home address and called.  When we got to the auction room, Bob Merrill was one of the few people still there as the evening's auction had ended.  He didn't know anything about it.  Then, two of Heritage's employees came into the room with my bag in hand.  I thanked them profusely and offered them a reward which they declined.  I took their names fully intending to give them a public commendation in the numismatic media but still have not found the paper on which I wrote their names. Maybe they'll send a private message and identify themselves?

By the way, the major loss I avoided was a 1925 three-inch un-plated bronze Norse American medal believed to be unique.

Lessons learned...NEVER leave anything of value with someone else, even for a short time AND there are still honest people out there.

NCViking, I've seen that medal. It would've been hard to go on after losing a unique piece like that. :(

In the world of retail, there is a concept called shrink
This is what happens to inventory due to loss, theft, waste, etc.

Every year or so I do an inventory of my collection and then have to delete some records from my database for the ones I can't find. Sometimes I remember selling a missing coin and sometimes like in the case of a cracked out proof set, I spent the coins I didn't submit just to put the proof coins in circulation.

Overall though I don't think I've lost a coin, but I have misplaced a couple that took a long time to find but they showed up eventually.
