I can get as close as AH1223 and I believe it is Turkish, but that's as far as I get. Can anybody identify this piece?

Probably related to this jewelry imitation

Thanks. I saw the 78, but did not consider that it might have been a regnal year. The hole didn't bother me because there were multiple examples of "holed" coins shown in that date range in Krause.

I believe the 78 you are referring to is actually 28. The date should be 1223/28. While I can't find that exact coin, the design is the same as a gold Turkish coin. KM#645 Cedid Mahmudiye AH 1223/28

Yep, it's a jewellery imitation of an Ottoman Turkish gold coin. Sometimes known as a "belly dancer coin", though replica coins such as this are used for far more varied purposes than just that. "1223/78" is a very commonly encountered "date".

Apparently I have been awarded one DPOTD.
