@ajaan was graciously willing to let me piggyback on his recent PCGS submission and this was one of 3 coins I sent along for grading. I am quite pleased with the outcome -
I like that design, too. The Ceiba tree, however, has more cultural and historical significance. Furthermore, it is the trademark of CAR coins, not just of those minted in Guatemala, but of CAR coins minted in Costa Rica and Honduras as well. The Ceiba tree is extremely significant throughout much of Latin America.
Although I did not emphasize Ceiba trees or quetzals, I have discussed the political and historical importance of CAR coins, with references to many coins that were minted in Guatemala. Hopefully, others will report upon the conceptual meanings of the symbols in the CAR designs. The designs of many 19th century Latin American coins are intriguing.
Aha, so you were piggybacking with us, then. I was trying to remember where I'd seen that coin before.
It's a beauty! And congrats on the MS68 grade! Wow! I've never "made" anything higher than MS67 in a TPG submission, and that only rarely. That coin is "star" worthy if it had gone to NGC, I'll bet. But I'd rather have the nice TrueView than a star on the label.
Here were my three on that shared submission (note the cert numbers). The Liberia is not only pop.1 but pop.1 in all grades at PCGS, which surprised me. And since it went from NGC PR64 BN to PCGS PR65 BN, I believe it is now the highest graded at either service. (I had Don crack it out of the NGC holder before it went off.)
Ragusa grosso, ca. 1372-1438- made XF40
Teutonic Order 1/4 thaler, ca. 1615- made XF45
Liberia cent, 1847- made PR65 BN (cracked out of NGC PR64 BN holder before submission)
Shoot me a PM again sometime. I will likely have some more books for you soon. I enjoyed our book swap and discussion.
I'd be nervous breaking out someone else's coin too - I know I was a bit nervous breaking out a few of my own.
Those are some good looking coins LordM, but I really like your Ragusa grosso best. I appreciate your comments on the 5 centavo and concur I'd rather have the Trueview than no pic and I think most everyone can tell this one is a star.

Awesome coin. The TrueView looks great and congrats on the 68 as well!
Always looking for tougher PSA 10's of Nolan Arenado, Alex Bregman, Mookie Betts, Francisco Lindor, and Mike Trout.
Love the Quetzal bird design!
8 Reales Madness Collection
Wow. That is very cool. Perhaps the toning is helping in the effect, but it looks like it is struck as well as a medal!

Among the many pertinent sources that can easily be found on the Internet, I found the following passage relating to Ceiba trees and Puerto Rico : "Ceiba Tree Park located in San Antón, Ponce, Puerto Rico; its centerpiece is the historic Ceiba de Ponce, a 500-year-old Ceiba pentandra tree associated with the founding of the city.In the surroundings of the legendary Ceiba de Ponce, broken pieces of indigenous pottery, shells, and stones were found to confirm the presence of Taino Indians long before the Spaniards that later settled in the area."
