RIP board member Frank Massero

I just found out today that board member Frank Massero (FabFrank) passed away on April 3rd. He was only 53 years old. He left behind his wife Judy and children Frank Jr. and Samantha.

Frank was one of the greatest people that I have had the privilege of knowing. He and I have had many conversations over the years and had the same collecting interests and bought, sold and traded more cards to each other than I can even remember.

Frank was a survivor of 9/11 and worked on the 84th floor of the south tower for Euro Brokers. He told me the story of how he and a lady he worked with started down the stairs 15 minutes before the 2nd plane took out the 78th through 84th floors. He and his colleague were in the sky lobby on the 44th floor when the 2nd plane hit which blew the whole side of the building inwards. He helped his colleague down the stairs and exited the building 15 minutes before it collapsed. He lost 61 colleagues that day who didn't leave the office soon enough.

Please keep his family in your prayers.

Thanks,

Greg Montieth

Very sad. 53 is far too young. Will definitely include his family in my prayers.

RIP. I will say a prayer for his family.

2016 has been a tough year. My brother-in-law died suddenly on Sept 3rd also at 53 years old. It has been hard to deal with at times.

Frank and I have some mutual friends from the neighborhood in the Bronx where we grew up, but I never met him, and only knew of him (and that) from the few PMs we shared here. RIP Frank.

I did not know him, but I agree with all the sentiments expressed above. 53 is far too young for anyone to go, especially someone who sounds like a remarkable person. Thoughts and prayers for his family in this time.

Wow, this really sucks. I had no idea. Frank was a great guy. RIP.

The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

I'm sorry to read this. I had some discussions with him about 71 Topps and if memory serves, we made a few deals. My condolences.

Frank also shared his 9/11 story with me. He told me that he was in the second building to be hit and started for the exit immediately...despite the fact that a message over the intercom was telling people to stay where they were. That always sent chills down my spine. Having been there for the 1993 bombing, Frank told me he was taking no chances.

I know years ago we had a conversation about 1985 Topps Football. Not sure if he was still collecting those??

Frank collected everything...lol...no kidding. He and I talked extensively about autographed football cards and he had the entire 1997 UD Legends set, plus HOF autographed cards, 1990's/2000's SP/SP Authentic even vintage football. I believe that he collected other sports too but I never discussed with him.

    Greg,

Sad news in deed. I too have traded with Frank both auto'd cards like the 97 Legends but also SP football insert cards. I didn't know he was a 9/11 survivor. I rode the train into Chicago with a guy that was in one of the buildings that day as well.

I hope your feeling better yourself!!

  • This is very sad. Sold a large number of '85 Topps football to Frank a while back. Through correspondence, he seemed like a great guy.

Was not aware of the 9/11 experience. Remarkable.
