Cross-Over: did you get a better grade when you crossed-over to PCGS

I did have two coins that crossed-over to a higher grade into PCGS holders. Nevertheless, one coin was sent in June 1996 (4 free crossover for PCGS 10th birthday), and the other one was sent in Nov 1999.

Did you have the same experience? If so, tell us your story. I will tell you what the two coins are later. image

I had a proof morgan come back 1 grade higher than the ANACS holder it was in. But most of the time equal (but only about 30%) crossed.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

I had an ANACS XF45 Mercury dime come back AU50 and on that was an ANACS MS63 come back MS63FB.

Should I mention the coins that failed to cross only to come back higher after being cracked and submitted raw? imageimageimageimageimage

In defense of PCGS, some coins (proofs for example) can be difficult to grade inside a plastic holder. I've certainly cracked open my share of 1970's proof sets after carefully examining the Ikes, only to be greeted with obvious hairlines once out of the plastic.

So I imagine PCGS is more conservative than they would be with a raw coin because they don't want to get burned -- once they crack that baby open, they've taken on the financial liability for it.

I think the "best of both worlds" is to send them marked CROSS AT ANY GRADE (slap a sticker saying that over the current slab's grade). That way you get the protection of not ending up with a body bag for some not-necessarily-legitimate PVC damage or questionable toning, yet allow them to crack it out to determine its true grade.
  • If you put a sticker on the coin be careful not to cover the coin. I just sent in a batch of coins to get crossed at any grade and they almost sent them back because the sticker did not peel off the plastic cleanly. They called and I said go ahead and remove coins from holder to grade.

I guess not many folks reply this thread and thus it tells me that PCGS did not give a grade higher very often.

My two coins got a better grade are
    1) 1918 5c buffalo NGC MS63 crossed over to PCGS MS64 in 1996 and
    2) 1918/7S 25c standing liberty quarter ANACS AU53 crossed over to PCGS AU53FH. The lone AU53FH in the pop report.
All crossed over from original holders.

The 1918 5c was purchased from Jack Beymer and was re-sold it back to him with nice profit. image

The 1918/7S 25c was purchased from teletrade. It is an obvious a 100% Full Head coin with all over-date full head characters, i.e., die break on the letter T and on liberty throat, and of course, 3 leaves completed and connected, hearline are separate and hear hole is there. I originally sent it to ANACS for re-grade and asked the question why this is not a Full Head coin. ANACS replied that it did not meet their standard. This is the biggest joke I ever heard from them. Even J.Cline agreed the coin is a no-question-ask Full Head coin. I then sent it to PCGS and came back same grade but Full Head. If you collect SLQ, you might know how tough for PCGS to assign FH on its holder. imageimageimageimageimage

I just purchased a 1929 ANACS MS65RD lincoln that (through the holder) is 66RD all day long. So it is suggested that I submit the cross at any grade so they crack it out and then grade it assuring me of no body bag? My alternative would be to crack it out myself but with earlier date lincoln they come back in BB so often for various reason I am no keen to doing it.

I had a 1906 indian in proof 67rb that came back 67rd a few years back. I didn't even notice the color upgrade for several days.image
  • So...

I can submit crossovers with "Cross At Any Grade" stickers. Will the graders believe it to be a raw coin?

Could I submit re-grades this way, so the graders see a raw coin?

    --------

    Needed:

PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG, or old PCI:

    1) Elizabethian II Sovereigns (need not be slabbed)
    2) Victorian Sovereigns
    3) 1918-I Sovereign
    4) English 1/3 Guinea any date
  • My luck has been worse none have crossed out of about 30. OUCH! most of the problem was sorting out the ICG crap in the beginning....now I know better.....
  • Seems like ANACS crosses higher more often than any other grading company. Out of 10 coins submitted for PCGS crossover (7 were NGC and 3 were ANACS): 4 NGC coins crossed at equal grades, 3 NGC coins didn't cross, 2 ANACS coins crossed higher, and 1 ANACS crossed to an equal grade. The 2 ANACS that crossed higher: 1 went from MS63 to MS64 and the other went from MS62 to MS64! Needless to say, that increased their value a lot!!!

    MY COLLECTION
  • I cracked out a 2000-D Massachusetts quarter graded NGC MS-66 PL and submitted it to PCGS. It came back MS-67. I thought it might - it looked really clean for a 66.

I have only had one crossover to a higher grade...a 1964 JFK proof went from NGC 67UCAM to 68DCAM at PCGS...I thought it was undergraded at NGC and I think PCGS got it right. Most others have been at same grade or one grade lower...had one ICG coin drop three grades, which was disappointing since I am pretty good at pre-screening before submission...I don't just send in anything and everything to cross over. Have had good luck with both "crossover" (in slab) and crack out and submit.
