New To The Forum, Need help with valuing Errors

hey guys,

I'm new to the forum and also collecting, about 5 months now. Ive taken a fancy to error's, problem is some people want outrageous prices for some and then some other people seem to almost give them away.

Im sure the note itself has a lot to do with it, but is there really that broad of a spectrum in pricing? are certain errors worth their weight in gold?(pun intended)

ill try to upload a couple of pictures of my errors and see what you guys think they're worth compared to what i've paid for them and/or seen similar ones priced at

thanks!

glad i found this place, seems like a great resource

Glad you found us,welcome! I have been collecting for 16 years (and am now a dealer and a collector) and although I am not an error expert I have many and here's my take on the subject. Certainly the individual note has much to do with it's value. There are some errors that are common or not dramatic and they will cost less than rarer, more visually dramatic ones, generally.Of course, from time to time, a great deal is found. Also,as a general rule, the more modern the error, the more available(with exceptions of course) they may be.Therefore, the older the note, the less errors you may find and they tend to cost more. This is most likely due to the volume of note printed.I collect errors as well but mostly within the types that I otherwise already collect(1928,1934 and 1963 FRNs).Also, one word for the wise....there are many, many fakes out there and they often fool less knowledgeable collectors and tend to sell for low prices-be cautious. Can't wait to see some pics! Here's a few of mine from the 1928 series...these are pretty rare....enjoy!

I'm not an error collector per se; but do have a few. May I suggest you check out the link below and go from there. These are good references and will assist you identification, etc. As for values, check out Heritage, Lyn Knight, eBay, etc. and of course other forum members who are quite knowledgeable.

  • Welcome! I'm fairly decent with errors... been chasing them over 30 years, although I stopped collecting them YEARS AGO & only buy & sell them as inventory now. When you get your pics up I'll be glad to throw my .02 cents in, for what it's worth... image
Buying, Selling & collecting for over 30 Years!

I only COLLECT $2.00 FANCY #s but errors, fancy numbers, uncut sheets & autographed currency are my areas of expertise. Always glad to help when I can!
  • Welcome! There are two references that are a guide to pricing and how these errors are made by the bureau so that you will have knowledge about fakes, what is possible and what is not.

First: US Error Note Encyclopedia by Stephen M. Sullivan 2nd edition is the most recent and out of print so you will have to find it in the secondary market like on eBay or Half.com

Second: United States Paper Money Errors by Dr. Frederick J. Bart I have the 2nd edition but I believe there is a recently released 3rd edition I have seen on eBay

I stress these are a guide only. numbersman is correct there are many fakes.

    Very nice errors.

I like the gutter fold on the $20. Is there a gutter on the back too? I find these interesting whether they are one one side or both.

The U37/U47 $1 SC mismatch is very common as there were 100s (packs) saved. Still a classic for the error collector.

The $1 1993 full B2F (back to front) transfer is quite nice. Not as common on the 1993 series from my observations.

    Thanks for sharing.
