Shady sellers and bad timing

About a week ago guy I've bought from on Ebay before (and that has perfect feedback) contacts me and asks if I'd like (2) Bowman Chrome Orange Refractor auto rookies of this MLB-er (numbered out of 25). We haggle on price a little, I end up paying what was at THAT point a little more than what one had sold going for in the past week. Agree on $1250 for one and $1150 for the other. Paid for both of them and planned to get them graded at the Philly show PSA is going to be at this weekend. (By the way, the $1150 one we had agreed on $1100 initially until he gets back with me and says "Hey man, can you do $50 more? I'm not asking much." I should have known then to back away.)

Anyway, he still hadn't sent the cards when a few nights ago this MLB-er has a huge game and has gotten super-hot again. I winced a little knowing this guy hadn't sent the cards yet, thinking he just might decide to "change his mind". Sure enough, an hour after the game I get a message saying "Hey man, I just can't sell you both of those at that price anymore. One just sold for $1700 plus. I won't be an ------ and not sell you the other one, but you've got to see where I'm coming from. I would just be leaving money on the table and would get screwed." (Never mind the fact that we'd already agreed on price and I'd paid in good faith).

He tells me on Wednesday that he will overnight the one he DID decide to sell me. He'll send it Thursday so I get it by Friday before I'm out of town. Says he'll send tracking number after he sends it on Thursday. Well, you guessed it - that's the last I've heard from him. No tracking number yesterday or today, no answers to messages/emails. Oh, and the card he pulled back from me he just sold for $2,000. Pretty sure I won't be seeing the one I bought for $1250, but at this point I'm more concerned that he's just going to try and keep my money. The sale wasn't through Ebay, but I did use a debit card I have on my Paypal account to pay so hopefully I can at least get my $ back.

Thanks for reading about my frustrations. May all your card transactions be with people that have character!

Did you use Paypal Family & Friends or Paypal goods? I don't know that using your debt card will help if you uses F&F.

Actually JUST sent a refund for the card.

I think I'm done doing the "buy and flip" thing, even though I was only doing it with this one player. I have had more problems with shady buyers/sellers buying and selling the "hot" prospect cards then I've ever had when I buy vintage. This of course isn't the case across the board, but I think the "fast money" card folks are a different kind of clientele than other kinds of buyers.

    So many headaches!
  • Wait until you make a successful buy and flip, then the player crashes to earth and your buyer wants to return it 6 months later under Paypals policy. Boo.

Oh man has that happened to you? I have had a few people that were "unhappy with the condition of the card" once this hot player (OK it's Gary Sanchez) cooled off a bit. (They didn't realize the condition was less then they'd hoped until two weeks after they bought the cards of course).

Of course now that Sanchez is on fire again those cards they wanted refunds on have hit new highs...

I don't think there is anything wrong with the "buy and flip" aspect, just the people you "buy" from. I probably wouldn't deal with that particular seller anymore. Sounds like flake! I'd send him a nice little email telling him where he can go.

I did. I doubt he cares. He even knew I was considering giving my almost 11-year-old son one of these as a reward for getting through some hard tests at a Children's Hospital next week. Hey, but at least he was able to squeeze every dollar out of the card, right?
  • I have heard every excuse in the book from sellers. One day I got wise to it, and I realized my 'friend' was emailing sellers after items he'd missed had closed and offering more money!

That's really sleazy. I would not deal with that seller ever again.

Please post up who the seller is once you are made whole so the rest of us can avoid this POS.

I would love to...is there any possible downside of me doing that?

  • I dont suppose if the player had torn out his rotator cuff the guy would have sent you back a few hundred with the cards.........people like this will get their fair comeuppance sooner rather than later rest assured. Sorry this happened............

Thanks. I just wish there was a way I could warn other Ebayers about him.
