Question on this 1888 Nickel.

This is a pic of the top of the middle 8 of a 1888 Nickel PCGS58.

Is this the DDO 101 or a RPD?

Looks more like a "re-cut" date (RPD), than doubled-die, to me.

    .

isnt the 100 numbers reserved for ddo?

    pretty sure a ddo-801 doesn't exist.

ddr-801 in general exist. i'm painstakingly waiting on one from pcgs now.

checked several sources and found no 801 ddo 5c 1888.

i'd say 90% of the time, in a ddo situation, the date is one of the last places to look. the merc, frank, jeff series being an exception. ok, maybe ignore that 90% thing.

i agree with ts2c, looks like an rpd, not a ddo. thought it was a morgan 8 at first.

The DDO 101 is a doubled ear variety. Coinfacts has an image of the MS65 example and it is very clear.

But doesn't the DDO 101 also have this doubling of the top of the middle "8"?

The two images of the DDO FS-101 shows different date characteristics and die erosion/polishing under the nose (missing area on the MS65, whereas the XF40 is still there) on coinfacts. I don't think that the XF 40 is the DDO, but rather a RPD.

Yours appears to be a RPD.

One is the correct DDO and the other is not. The XF40 is a DDO according to Kevin Flynn's book, but not the one in the Cherry Pickers guide
