Amazing Goodwill Find - 1993 SP Jeter - UPDATE - PSA 9 with a Problem...

This afternoon I took a flyer on a $4.99 binder full of what looked to be mostly junk-era stars and rookies... "Stars" is used very loosely- I actually bought this book as it had a few Rickey Henderson cards for my PC that I didn't have, and I noticed some Randy Johnson rookies. When I got home, I spent more time going through the the book. Between pages dedicated to Reggie Jefferson and Howard Johnson I found one for Derek Jeter, including a 1993 SP that looks to be in fantastic shape. I am inserting some photos below (or at least trying). I thought there might be some scratches in the foil, but as you can see in the last picture, it looks like the scratches are actually on the page rather than the card. I'm terrified to touch it, so I haven't actually removed the card from the page. Needless to say, some expletives were shouted when I saw it in the book... The corners and edges took to be sharp, and the only flaw I can find is a small spot of white on red corner of the number box on back. I've never submitted a card to PSA, but I think this is the one if I'm ever going to. I'm totally over the moon about this. I'm pretty sure $4.99 is less than packs of SP were going for in my town's card shop back in '93.

*****UPDATE*****

I received the card back from PSA today - it graded a 9, which I'm thrilled about - however, the card that came back is clearly not the card I sent in. The one I sent in had a scuff on the front next to the "Y" in New York - visible in this scanned photo:

Pic 4

The one I got back has no scuff there, but instead has one on the middle of the right edge of the card:

Pic 5

In my mind, the one I get back is far more noticeable. I don't think mine would have graded higher than a 9, but has anyone seen something like this before? Obviously, if mine would have graded higher than a 9, there is a significant difference in value. Do I have any recourse?

Your pictures are not showing on my computer but congrats!

I used to work at Goodwill and remember a guy buying boxes of 1986 basketball. I believe the packs were opened and only the cards were placed back in the box.

We also sold an old Beatles record player for $4.99 for and he ended up selling it on eBay for something like $4k.

Photos working for me now, wow, congrats again!
  • Thanks- I've had a run of good thrift store finds this year, but this one blew me away. Not sure I'm going to beat this.

If it gets a PSA 10 then probably not image

A guy on here won an unopened box of 1978 hockey cards from the Salvation Army on eBay for, I think, less than $100 and sold them to BBCE for, I think, over $1k.
  • I won't even let myself dream about a 10- pretty sure that's out based on the little bit of white I saw on the back. Before this I think my best was finding a few Peyton Manning Topps Chrome rookies, as well as a Tom Brady UD rookie in the same box. I once found what must have been a breaker's leftovers in 2013 bowman chrome- about 20,000 cards including over 100 each of all the prospect cards (and a handful of autos) but no refractors, Puigs, or Jeters- (ironically). But this is by far the the best single card. I've found some autographed balls, but I'm not entirely sure they're legit- if only because of where I found them. I might include those in my submission, if I'm sending stuff in finally.

Anytime I go to goodwill or any other second hand store to look for sports cards they always have them locked in a glass case. I never have to courage to ask if they can unlock the case so I can "cherry pick" their cards to see if they severely underpriced something, so I usually just leave empty handed. I wish they wouldn't lock their 1980's and 90's cards in a damn case lol.

Congrats hard to tell exactly from pics but that does look really sharp. How awesome would it be if that beauty came back a "9"?

Congrats on the Jeter. Great looking card & a steal of a deal. I love hunting treasures at Goodwill & Thrift Shops. Never know what you may find. I have had great success on locating autographed books at these places, my best being former Knickerbocker & Politician Bill Bradley, I think for less than $5.00. Happy Collecting!

I love hearing stories like this. It gives me hope of finding something cool like this one day. After all, Paris, TN is only about 2 hours from me. Who knew?

Congratulations! I actually found one at a garage sale a few years back as well. I've made a lot more money on various other items, but because it was where my heart is (cardboard), I was mega stoked about it.

collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.

looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started

  • Thanks again everyone - I scanned it prior to sending today, so there should be some better pics below. The smudge next to his glove is on my scanner, as are all the specks... on closer inspection, there is a small scuff on the foil to the right of the "y" in New York - but its not as noticeable in real life as on the scan. Still beyond excited. We'll see what happens...

Congrats on the grade! Are you looking to sell it? If so, I would just let this issue go. What are 9s going for?

  • I sent an email, but I suspect there's nothing to be gained from pursuing it. Recent sales on ebay range from $2,800-$3,700 for a 9, so any way you cut it I'm thrilled... I'll definitely be selling, just not sure the route yet.

That scuff mark looks like it's on the inside of the holder in Pic 5. If it is really on the card, you should take it up with PSA regarding damage to the surface, which would obviously reduce the value. Otherwise, to preserve the value of what truly is a PSA Mint 9 card, you might also want to reconsider & wait to sell until you get the darn thing reholdered.

I think it could be the holder to and if so send it back and make them reholder it.
Also if it is the holder and you get it reholdered wait tell after he gets voted into the HOF and
before the HOF ceremony to sell or you will be leaving money on the table.

Oh boy. I was about to send the bulk of my collection in to get reholdered. Looks like I will be doing a lot of scanning over the next week before I send the cards in.

Same card...same 2 small marks to the left of his right ear. Same scratch near the "new" scuff. Like others, I think it's the holder. Great find!

Am i reading this right? OP thinks his card was switched during grading?

Would like to know how this ends. Please update us all as this seems very strange.

    Collecting PSA 9's from 1970-1977. Raw 9's from 72-77. Raw 10's from '78-'83.
Collecting Unopened from '72-'83; mostly BBCE certified boxes/cases/racks.
    Prefer to buy in bulk.
  • After looking at marks near the ear, I think I'm in the camp of a scuff on the holder... hadn't noticed those but it seems like a match. I'm guessing there was likely a mark either on the penny sleeve or card saver I didn't see. I wish the shiny card made it easier for me to tell if the mark on the right side was on the card or holder, but it is what it is... I'll be asking for a new holder, but I'm willing to err towards there being nothing nefarious. Thanks for all the congrats- I definitely never expected to find this card!

Hi Doug! I'm alive but my three year old and one year old keep me from being openly active. I do a quick read during nap time or bath time here and there to keep my ear to the ground though! I'm still collecting the same old stuff though, so I'm still an addict. Hope collecting is treating you well.
