My new favorite card - Wilson Franks Roy Campanella

I was able to secure this 1954 Wilson Franks cards from this past week's PWCC auction. I've wanted this Campanella card for quite some time. Really happy with this one - there is some staining on the back but the front plays really nicely for such a low grade. I also bit off a little more than I could chew and won 3 other lower grade Wilsons: Feller, Sauer and Pafko.

Neat looking card and presents well. Now I am suddenly hungry for some hot dogs as well!
  • Thats a great looking card! A very attractive and well put together card!

Never seen those before, but I like the look of it! Looks like it could easily be a Topps issue card, with the exception of a random hotdog pack floating in the air.
  • Beautiful colors on that card. Congrats own owning a classic card. It's usually one of the more popular ones from that set.

Great job Daniel. That is one TOUGH set condition wise. Your Campy looks great. Are you going to put this set together?

That is a great looking card of Campy. That would be a nice addition to anyone's collection. Anyone have the background on how those cards were issued? I assume the were inserted in the hot dog packages. If so, a 2.5 is an amazing grade for what the card went through with moisture, packaging, etc. Happy Collecting!

Great campy! I just said on net 54 yesterday that he has some of the best looking cards. His 51B is gorgeous and his 53 bowman color is great too!

    Thanks, guys.
Mark - I just may want to put the set together. It's a really small set at 20 cards but the Ted Williams card will be a killer.
CWUCAT: The cards were indeed packaged with hot dogs. Here is part of what PSA has to say about the set: "This set, as hard as it is to imagine today, was packed with Wilson Hot Dogs and distributed across the country. For the love of mystery meat, they were actually packaged with hot dogs! The result? Staining from the dogs, a potential problem with any of the cards".
There is a Wilson Franks thread on Net54 and some of the cards people have are amazing.

Thanks for the reply BaltimoreYankee, I will need to read up on Net54. I love seeing people share their treasures on here, maybe someday I become proficient in doing so as well. Technology is not my strong suit. Happy Collecting!

Sincere congratulations on the 1954 Wilson Franks pick-ups. I am very happy for you. Thanks for sharing your joy and the scan of Roy.

For your interest and intrigue, there's two chapters and an appetizer-sized entree in my recently-released book on a CD that deal with the Wilsons. There will be some information and personal anecdotes not found in the SMR article. To read the press release, simply Google the title, Never Cheaper by the Dozen. In my heart of hearts, I believe you will love it and be glad you bought it. PM me if you wish further details.

    ---Indiana Jones (Brian Powell)

PS---Just had a nice 37-minute conversation with a customer today who read the first two chapters. He was raving over them and positively loves the book so far. Twas reading it on a train, having popped the CD into his laptop. He's a major collector and former New York City attorney. Selling it from home; you shan't find a copy at Barnes 'n Noble.
