On This Date in 1987, Cal Ripken Jr. had a Streak End..Not the One You Think!

While most people know that Cal Ripken Jr. holds the MLB record for the most consecutive games played streak @ 2632, few realize that he also holds the record for most consecutive "innings" played as well. His consecutive inning streak started the first inning of the game on 06/05/82 and ended September 14, 1987 (29 years ago today)......The Orioles were losing to the Blue Jays at the time 17-3 (who had already hit NINE homers in the game) and manager Cal Ripken Sr. sat Cal Jr. on the bench while the rest of the team played defense in the bottom of the 8th (future manager Ron Washington went to short)....Cal Sr. remarked after the game "What the hell, he couldn't hit a 20 run homer!"

Cal's inning streak ended at 8,264 that night north of the border....The next day, I wrote the Blue Jays a letter and asked if they would send me an un-used ticket to the game and they graciously complied...I did end up having PSA slab it a couple years ago..

Happy Anniversary Cal!

I almost wonder if that's more impressive than the game streak. Five straight seasons in which he didn't get an injury significant enough/painful enough to sit him down late in a game.

This is probably from the same article but George Pinkney is still in second place with 5152- a mark set 126 years ago. In fact you have to go all the way down to Ernie Banks in 1957-1959 to find the NEXT postwar player also on the consecutive innings streak list.

Very cool ticket, by the way. The Jays were stacked in '87.

Here is the jersey that the Orioles' Ron Washington wore when he went out to shortstop in the bottom of the 8th inning, thus ending the consecutive inning streak:

Ironically, Cal was ejected in a game @ Memorial Stadium on 09/25/87 (11 days later) for the first time in his career (more on Cal's career ejections at a later date), so perhaps it was a good thing that his consecutive inning streak ended the way it did that night in Toronto.

The Gateway Stamp company did issue a signed cachet commemorating this record streak:

You'll note that Gateway states that the inning streak was 8243 consecutive innings, however a few years ago that was researched and corrected to 8264.

Toronto was up 3.5 games with 7 to play - and finished 2 games back. 7-game losing streak to end the season, including 3 straight 1-run games to Detroit (who won the division). The capper was 1-0 complete game shutout by Frank Tanana on the season's last day against Jimmy Key. Larry Herndon, in the midst of his last good season, hit a homer to provide all the scoring.

Detroit started that season 11-19 and finished 98-64, helped along by Doyle Alexander's 9-0 run after the Smoltz trade.

You are right, though - Toronto was stacked. It's amazing they didn't win more than just the one division title in '85. Both Detroit & Toronto were stacked for about 5 years and only the Tigers got a World Series appearance (and win) out of it.
